Killorn, Beck Score First Career Goals in Road Victory for Corban Women’s Soccer

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – Scoring in both the opening and final minute of play this afternoon was the Corban University Women's Soccer team in their final match of the weekend, where they secured a 3-1 victory over the University of Providence to snap their three-game losing skid and pick up a hard-fought Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) play victory. Each of the three goals scored for the Warriors were by student-athletes who had yet to punch a shot through the netting in their collegiate career up to the start of today's contest, including sophomore midfielder Shaelee Killorn (pictured).

"As I said yesterday, when we play how we practice, we look and play really well," Warriors' head coach Travez Whyte stated. "Today, everyone had the right attitude and mentality to work hard for each. There were lots of beautiful moments! Shaelee with her first collegiate goal, Maya doing what she does best - scoring for us, and Chloe with her first goal for us as well! These student-athletes work really hard, and we are happy for their success! The grind continues on Monday, thanks again and safe travels home, traveling Warriors!"

Despite not having a single corner kick opportunity this afternoon, or on the weekend for that matter, the Navy and Gold (5-5-1, 2-3-0) were able to keep their offense up the field for a majority of the match to produce 13 shots, six of which were on goal and half ended in scoring plays. The Argos (3-6-0, 2-4-0) had six corner kick tries through the ninety minutes of regulation and came up empty handed on each occasion.

In quite possibly the quickest goal to be scored to begin a match in program history, and without doubt the fastest for a first career goal, the Corban starting attackers sprinted downfield on the opening kickoff for UP and caught the Argos napping, as senior forward Fatima Jimenez stole the ball, found freshman forward Kylah Sprague open in the middle of the field, who then connected with sophomore midfielder Shaelee Killorn on a single touch to set Killorn up for her first collegiate goal.

Just over twenty minutes later, Providence knotted the game at a goal apiece after the Warriors were unable to clear the ball from their own defensive penalty box, allowing midfielder Ernestina Serwaa Ofo to score after receiving a cross from midfielder Shae Waters.

Following halftime, true freshman forward Maya Alston registered her team-leading sixth goal of the season that would eventually stand to represent the game-winning goal as well at Argo Field. Alston's second half goal ties her for fifth in the conference for total goals this season and second overall in game-winners scored.

With the final minute nearly depleted from the scoreboard, the Warriors pushed up field to keep the ball away from the Argos and inconsequentially, scored with just seconds remaining as yet another Corban student-athlete stepped up to score their first collegiate goal. Playing in the midfield today, junior defender Chloe Beck gathered the attempted clear opportunity from UP and launched a 20-yard banger up and over the Providence goalkeeper as time was expiring to net the Warriors' third goal of the game and clinch the crucial road victory.

Beck would lead the Navy and Gold offense in shots this afternoon with a career-high five opportunities, one of which resulted in a save and the other in her first collegiate score. Alston provided another three shots for Coach Whyte and the program, all of which came on goal. Argos' forward Kailey Camper matched Beck with five shots of her own, while Serwaa Ofo tallied four shots.

Defensively for the Warriors, redshirt junior Catriona Burns earned the start in goal but saw a no-decision against her 2024 record after allowing the first half goal to Providence. Sophomore goalkeeper Ava Hayes entered after the halftime break to earn a second half shutout with a pair of saves and earned the victory in goal. UP goalie Chloe Parajo swatted three saves but allowed three goals in the losing decision.

The Warriors will take the long charter drive back to Salem tomorrow and begin preparations for a weekend in Washington, beginning with The Evergreen State College Geoducks (0-6-2, 0-4-1) on Friday, October 11th at 12:30pm.
