Early Goals Prove Costly as Warriors Fall to Raiders, 3-0

SALEM, Ore. – A score not even three minutes into the contest resulted in an uphill battle that the Corban University Women's Soccer team was unable to overcome this afternoon at the Outdoor Athletic Complex, as the Warriors dropped a 3-0 decision at home to Southern Oregon University prior to a three-week road trip that Corban will endure over the next three weekends.

"We played a strong SOU team that challenged us in various areas, and we know we have lots of work to do," explained Warriors' head coach Travez Whyte. "Despite the loss, players like Emilly, Vitoria, and Shaelee played their hearts out for us with a Warrior mentality. Excited for the growth we will have ahead of us, and huge thanks to all our supporting fans!"

It only took two minutes and forty-six seconds for the Raiders (6-2, 3-1) to their eventual game-winner, as midfielder Cora Thorndike accepted a perfectly place touch by forward Ava Johnson to set up a scorcher of a shot from just outside the penalty box, with forward Skyler Coleman earning the hockey assist on the deep ball from the midfield line.

Twenty-seven minutes later, forward Taytum Curtis doubled the Southern Oregon lead over Corban (4-4-1, 1-2-0) with an assist by midfielder Frida Vargas to put the Navy and Gold into a tight spot on their home field. An insurance goal in the 78th minute by midfielder Carter O'Shea, with an assist from defender Miller Bertani, sealed the Warriors' fate and resulted in their second-straight loss after a nearly non-existent appearance by the offense.

Corban managed eight shots on the day, yet only two would come on goal and the Navy and Gold were eventually outshot by SOU 14-8, with half of the Raiders' shots either resulting in saves or goals. Warriors' redshirt junior goalkeeper Catriona Burns secured four saves yet allowed a trio of goals to accept her first loss of the season in net. Her counterpart, SOU goalkeeper Ashlynn Hernandez, batted away two saves in her shutout performance.

Senior forward Fatima Jimenez was the only Warrior with multiple shots today, as she managed a pair of opportunities in just 36 minutes played. For Southern Oregon, forward Brooklyn Hayes didn't score or assist on any of the Raiders' scores, yet led the team with three shots taken on the day.

The Warriors now turn their attention to a three-week road trip, kicking off with their furthest venture of the season beginning in western Montana against Carroll College (5-1-3, 2-0-1) on Friday, October 4th at 2pm MT. Warrior fans wanting to watch the contest will need to download the Veo Live App to view the Saints' livestream.
