EUGENE, Ore. – It's been 3,667 days and just over ten years since the Corban University Women's Soccer team last dropped a match to their I-5 rival in a regular season meeting between the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) members, and the streak will end at ten-consecutive matches as Bushnell University overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to defeat the Navy and Gold 2-1 at Civic Park.
"These types of matches are right there for the taking," began Warriors' head coach Brooke Alteneder shortly after today's result in Eugene. "We just need to finish each match with the same passion and intensity as we start them, as we demonstrated in that gutsy first half performance."
The Warriors' (5-8-0, 2-6-0) lone shot on goal in the contest came just over the 20-minute mark in the first half, as redshirt junior midfielder Delaney Fiedler converted on a direct corner kick scoring play for her first goal of the season to put Corban up 1-0 early on the road against the Beacons (7-3-2, 6-2-0).
However, with just under 27 minutes left in the contest, Bushnell found the equalizer on a defensive misplay by the Navy and Gold, and 15 minutes later, scored the game-winner to flip their eleventh-straight loss to the Warriors into their first win against Corban since they were previously known as Northwest Christian University.
The Beacons were able to score as many goals this afternoon as in their previous two matchups with Corban combined thanks to the heroics of midfielder Addy Morgan and forward Ohu Miles, as Morgan played a free ball from just outside the penalty box up and over Warriors' junior goalkeeper Ava Hayes, while Miles scored her third goal of the season to break the 1-1 draw late in today's contest.
Hayes led Bushnell goalkeeper Ana Augusto in saves with seven, while Augusto picked up the winning decision and allowed a goal for the first time in a three-game span. Beacons' forward Elidia Cervantes Carlos led all attackers with six shots, while Warriors' sophomore forward Maya Alston took the lone other shot outside of Fiedler's opening goal today for Coach Alteneder's offense.
Corban women's soccer will hit the road once again next Friday and Saturday after a restful upcoming weekend, as they'll make the first of two stops south of Salem in Ashland to face off against RV Southern Oregon University (8-1-1, 5-0-1) at 12pm on October 24th.
