SALEM, Ore. – In a heated back-and-forth Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) affair this afternoon on Tim Hills Court, it was the visiting Warriors who escaped with a season sweep of the Corban University Men's Basketball team after Lewis-Clark State College was able to hit baskets in the clutch and fend off a Navy and Gold comeback bid via their 72-64 final score.
"Tough loss this afternoon, our guys battled their tails off," began Corban head coach Taylor Kelly. "LC State is a tough physical team. We battled hard, if we make a few more baskets and secure a few more boards, that game leans in our favor. It's not because our guys didn't give a phenomenal effort. Credit to LC State for playing well and making plays."
After trading buckets for nearly the entire first half, LC State (21-6, 16-5) gained the distance they would eventually need to clinch the road victory via a 9-3 run to end the opening period, capped with a three-pointer at three seconds remaining by guard Dylan Skaife. Despite multiple opportunities for Corban (14-13, 12-9) to scrap their way back into this contest throughout the second half, the visiting Warriors had an answer for every Navy and Gold rally and were able to increase their lead to double-digits before eventually settling for an eight-point road victory in the ever-competitive CCC.
Senior guard Luc Krystkowiak was the go-to student-athlete for the hometown Warriors today with a team-best 18 points, four rebounds, and three assists, while four other Corban players all scored nine points exactly. Those nine-point scorers include senior guard RJ Veliz, sophomore guard Ben Krystkowiak, junior guard Spivey Word, and redshirt junior guard Nikola Milosevic.
LC State guard John Lustig was nearly perfect from the field today in a 9-for-10 outing that included a game-high 20 points scored, along with six rebounds underneath the basket. Forward Alton Hamilton scored another 19 points and fell one board shy of a double-double, while guard MaCarhy Morris pitched in 16 points and five assists.
The Navy and Gold will host their Senior Day celebration between the women's and men's matchups tomorrow against Walla Walla University (4-21, 3-18), where Corban will be honoring nine seniors in their final regular season home contest at the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
