BANDON, Ore. – The Corban University Men's Golf team finished off an incredibly successful three-day stint at the Bandon Crossings Collegiate Match Play earlier this afternoon, as they defeated Simpson University via a 3-1 match play score to lock up a third-place team finish at the south coast tourney. They finished third out of the eight teams present, which featured four Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) programs, the Red Hawks, an NCAA DII team, and two junior colleges.
"Amazing effort from our boys today!" boasted Corban assistant coach Evan Inglesby earlier today. "We switched up the pairings a little bit to match up more strategically with Simpson, and it paid off. I'm really excited seeing the progress we've made just in the past month of spring, and winning over a team ranked ahead of us is a good indicator of the direction we're headed!"
After falling 3.5-0.5 in yesterday's semifinal stage, the Navy and Gold bounced back with a huge win over the Red Hawks in the tourney's third-place match, as they won three of the four pairings to compete this afternoon after switching up some of their pairs following their semifinal loss to Southern Oregon.
Powering Corban men's golf today were the junior-sophomore pairings of Brayden Sparkman/David Harvey and Andy Austen/Owen Heath, who defeated their Simpson counterparts by 2&1 margins, resulting in two separate pair wins before completing the 18 holes planned for today. Additionally, senior Max McDonough and freshman Riley Quillin clinched a 1-up victory on the final hole to clinch the victory for the Navy and Gold. Redshirt senior Andrew Classen and junior Brock Nelson dropped the only pair of the day for Corban via a 6&5 result.
The Warriors will stay local this upcoming weekend and participate in the Willamette Valley Cup at Creekside Golf Course, hosted by NCAA DIII Willamette University beginning on Saturday, March 15th and stretching into Sunday, March 16th.
