GREAT FALLS, Mont. – A single goal allowed in both the first and second halves of today's Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) opener for the Corban University Women's Soccer team resulted in their first loss since the beginning of September and their first to the University of Providence since the 2019 season. The Warriors (3-3-0, 0-1-0) matched the Argos (1-2-2, 1-1-0) in nearly every statistical category yet weren't able to find the back of the netting to provide UP with their first win of the season via a 2-0 final score.
"It was a tough one to start the conference season," began Corban head coach Brooke Alteneder. "Credit to the other side, they showed grit and outbattled us when it mattered. This one came down to fight, and we came up short. We need to be smarter with our possession and manage our energy better earlier in the game. But this is a building block for us. We'll take lessons, get back to work, and move on to the next."
The Argos jumped on the scoreboard early via a 13th-minute goal on a misplay in the Warriors' defensive half, as Providence defender Aurora Eastburn went uncovered on a free kick at midfield by defender Anisia Ramirez. After the ball bounced past group of Warriors and Argos near the middle of the Coban penalty box, Eastburn collected the loose ball and saw a 1-on-1 opportunity against Corban junior goalkeeper Ava Hayes go her way to score her team's first goal of conference play.
Following a plethora of shot on goal attempts by the Warriors, Providence was able to score their second of the game on a follow-up shot by forward Kailey Camper, as Hayes wasn't able to possess a shot by midfielder Shea Waters and instead allowed the second goal of the game that all but wrapped up today's result.
The Navy and Gold took just as many shots (13) and shots on goal (8) than the Argos, yet came up empty handed on each attempt, leading to their scoreless appearance. Sophomore forward Maya Alston led all players with eight shots, five of which resulted in saves as both Alston and freshman forward Kate Dickson had multiple shots hit the crossbar, posts, and narrowly saved by UP goalkeeper Jennifer Alvillar, who had eight saves on the day. Hayes finished with six saves and two goals allowed, slightly above her season average to date.
Corban women's soccer will make the long journey back to the Willamette Valley before heading back east once again next weekend, as their next CCC contest is scheduled for September 26th in Caldwell, Idaho against the No. 5-ranked College of Idaho Yotes (4-1-0, 1-0-0) for a 4pm MT/3pm PT kickoff.
