Warriors Fall to Knights Via Trio of 1st Half Goals

BOX SCORE

PORTLAND, Ore.
– Despite a game-high four saves by senior goalkeeper Aaron Franklin (Red Bluff, Calif.), Corban's men's soccer team fell to the Knights of Warner Pacific, 3-0, Tuesday evening in a conference match-up at Portland Christian High School.

Today's loss drops Corban's overall record to 1-8-1 and 0-7-0 in conference play, while Warner Pacific improves to 7-3-0 overall and a conference-leading 6-1-0.

After a 90-minute delay due to a scheduling mix-up with the officials, Warner Pacific wasted no time in scoring the eventual game-winning goal. The Knights' Carlos Pehr took a long throw-in off the cross bar from Andrew Scott at the 4:14 mark and headed home his second goal of the season from five yards out.

Less than 30 minutes later, Warner Pacific's Alija Sacirovic increased the Knights' lead to two goals at the 33:22 mark off a deflected shot by Pehr. The scoring play began with a shot by Pehr that was deflected onto the awaiting foot of Sacirovic, who deposited his team-leading sixth goal into the back of the net.

Two minutes later, Warner Pacific ended the game's scoring at the 35:01 mark when Pehr netted his second goal of the evening off another assist by Scott. A near repeat of the Knights' opening goal, Pehr headed home another long throw-in from Scott for his third goal of the '09 season.

Over the opening 45 minutes, Corban was out-shot by eight (11-3) before turning up the defensive pressure during the second half. During the game's final 45 minutes, the visiting Warriors held Warner Pacific scoreless as the Knights unleashed four shots on goal that were all kept from crossing the goal line.

Junior Aaron Paulson (St. Helens, Ore.) led the Warriors' offense with a team-leading two shots with one on-goal, while four other Corban players registered one shot each.

Warner Pacific's goalkeeping duo of Sean Ervin and Drew Bonifacio combined for the shutout, as Ervin recorded a team-best two saves and Bonifacio made one save.

Corban will return to the field on Tuesday, Oct. 13th, when they travel south to Eugene for a match-up with conference rival Northwest Christian beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Mike Kelly Field.
