BOX SCORES – GAME #1 | GAME #2
NEWBERG, Ore. – Senior
Erin Sailors (Anchorage, Alaska) threw a one-hitter in the opener to go along with a pair of home runs by senior
Karlee Sisler (Corvallis, Ore.) and junior
Jessica Schell (Portland, Ore.) in the night cap, as Corban's softball team swept NCAA Division III member George Fox, 3-0 & 6-3, Friday afternoon at the Morse Softball Field.
After two scoreless innings, Corban struck for a pair of runs in the top of the third off three hits. Sophomore
Jessie Jones (Gladstone, Ore.) led off the frame with an infield single before advancing to second via a stolen base. The very next batter – junior
Rebecca Franke (Pendleton, Ore.) – roped a double to right center that scored Jones, as the second-year Warrior would cross the plate as the eventual game-winning run. Two batters later, Sisler brought Franke home via a RBI groundout to third to cap the Warriors' scoring in the third inning.
In the seventh inning, Corban struck for one more run off a trio of hits. Jones once again began the frame with a single up the middle before stealing second. After a Franke fly out, Jones swiped third before coming home on a double to right field by freshman
Brittany Wagner (Oregon City, Ore.) that capped the Warriors' scoring in the opener.
Offensively, three Warriors – Jones, Wagner, and Sisler – each registered two hits to go along with five other Corban players – Franke, junior
Rachel Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.), freshman
Twyla Baggarley (Hillsboro, Ore.), juni
or Kacie Emerick (Bellingham, Wash.), and senior
Megan Gaylord (Portland, Ore.) – that recorded a hit each.
Sailors went the distance for Corban allowing a mere George Fox single in the sixth inning, as the Bruins' lone hit, to go along with a career-high 14 strikeouts.
In the night cap, George Fox got on the scoreboard first via a single run off a pair of hits in the first inning.
Corban waited until the top of the fourth inning before striking for four runs off six hits. Franke led off the frame with a double to left center before Schell registered her first home run as a Warrior – a blast to center field – that scored a pair of runs. One batter later, Sisler answered Schell's four-bagger with the ninth home run of her career – a two-run bomb to center field that scored Steigleman following her single up the middle.
The Warriors' next at-bat produced another run, as Baggarley brought home Steigleman with a single through the left side. Steigleman reached via a walk then advanced to second on a wild pitch before coming home on Baggarley's hit.
In its last at-bat, Corban struck again via the long ball thanks to Franke's first round-tripper as a Warrior. Franke launched the Warriors' third home run of the game over the center field fence, as she added some insurance runs for Corban's pitching staff.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, George Fox attempted a comeback scoring a pair of runs on two hits. Unfortunately for the host Bruins, a game-ending line out to the pitcher would conclude today's action and hand Corban a much-needed double header sweep.
Sisler led the Warrior's bat-attack in the finale going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, while Franke, Steigleman, and Baggarley registered two hits each. Schell and Gaylord rounded out Corban's offensive attack with a hit each, while a Warrior duo worked the circle en route to picking up the win.
Baggarley began the game in the circle for the Warriors, as she went the first 4.2 innings allowing one earned run on five hits to go along with a pair of strikeouts. Baggarley handed the ball over to Wagner in the bottom of the fifth inning for the final 2.1 innings, as she allowed a pair of unearned runs on two hits en route to earning her first career save.
With today's sweep, Corban improves to 6-8 overall versus George Fox's early 1-3 win-loss record. The Warriors were slated to be back in action on Monday, March 2nd, against California Pacific Conference member Simpson at 1:00 p.m. on Warrior Field. Due to unplayable field conditions, the double header has been cancelled and a make-up date has yet to be determined.
