Baggarley Belts Birthday Bomb in Sweep of Pios

BOX SCORES – GAME #2 (FROM 3/4/09) GAME #1 | GAME #2

SALEM, Ore.
– Freshman Twyla Baggarley (Hillsboro, Ore.) celebrated her 19th birthday with a solo home run down the left field line and a complete game performance in helping lead Corban's softball team to a double header sweep over Lewis & Clark, 11-2 & 10-2, Tuesday afternoon at Warrior Field.

The two teams began the day with the completion of last week's finale that was halted in the top of the fourth inning due to rain in Portland.  With a 6-2 lead, the Warriors added a single run in their opening at-bat before posting three more runs on the board in the top of the fifth inning via junior Rebecca Franke's (Pendleton, Ore.) second home run of the season – a three-run blast to straight away center field.  Freshman Brittany Wagner (Oregon City, Ore.) closed out the game, as she went the distance to pick up her second win of the season thanks to a 10-4 Corban victory.

“Our pitchers threw well today and defensively we were solid, but the story of the game was our offense,” said second-year head coach Nathan Ohta. “The girls had a solid mental approach at the plate and we swung the bats well all day long. That was the difference.”

In today's opener, Lewis & Clark put a single run on the board in the first inning thanks to a lead off walk by Caroline DeVincenzi. During the next at-bat, DeVincenzi advanced via a wild pitch before coming home on a bases loaded walk to Laura Parker with two outs that handed the visiting Pioneers an early 1-0 lead.

Wasting no time, Corban tied the game at 1-all in the bottom of the first inning when sophomore Jennifer Kollaer (Albany, Ore.) registered a one-out single up the middle before stealing second. One batter later, Kollaer came home on a double to center field by junior Jessica Schell (Portland, Ore.) that knotted the game for final time.

In the bottom of the second inning, the host Warriors struck for a pair of runs when Baggarley led off with a single to right center before advancing to second on a wild pitch. The very next batter – junior Jessica Pierce (Kennewick, Wash.) – singled back to the pitcher that allowed Baggarley to score on the throw to first in an attempt to get Pierce. Two batters later, Pierce came home on Kollaer's infield single that brought home the eventual game-winning run and handed the Warriors a two-run lead (3-1).

One inning later, Corban exploded for five runs on five hits that included a run-scoring triple by Pierce before she came home on a wild pitch two batters later. Franke then drove in her lone RBI of the game via a single through the left side before the Warriors' scoring ended with a two-run single to right field by Schell that handed Corban a seven-run lead (8-1).

Corban capped 11 unanswered runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Baggarley recorded a lead off single to short before advancing to second on Franke's second hit of the game – a single to left field. With the bases loaded, junior Rachel Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) drew a walk before Schell capped the Warriors' scoring with another two-run single up the middle that scored Kollaer and Franke.

With a 10-run lead (11-1), Corban watched as Lewis & Clark started a comeback in the top of the fifth inning with Kristin Breninger registering a lead-off single through the right side. Two batters later, DeVincenzi singled down the left field line that allowed Breninger to advance one base. The very next batter – Sara Standish – loaded the bases via a single through the left side before Jessica Mullins drew a walk that scored the visiting Pioneers' second run. With the possibility of having the game extended due to the eight-run mercy rule, Corban got the game's final out via a ground out to the pitcher for the final score of 11-2.

Schell led the Warriors offensively with a perfect 3-for-3 performance that included a game-high five RBI, while Kollaer registered three hits and three runs scored. Franke, Baggarley, and Pierce rounded out Corban's bat-attack with two hits each, while senior Erin Sailors (Anchorage, Alaska) went the distance in the circle allowing two runs (both earned) on four hits to go along with a game-high five strikeouts.

In the night cap, neither team scored until the bottom of the second inning when Baggarley belted her second collegiate home run – a towering blast down the left field line – that handed the host Warriors an early 1-0 lead.

After another scoreless inning, Corban put five runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when Baggarley registered a one-out single to center field before advancing to second on junior Kacie Emerick's (Bellingham, Wash.) single up the middle. The Warriors loaded the bases via senior Megan Gaylord's (Portland, Ore.) single through the right side before Franke doubled off the top of the right field fence to drive in three runs. The very next batter – Kollaer – belted her team-leading third home run of the season thanks to a two-run blast to left center field that made the score 6-0 in favor of Corban.

In the top of the fifth inning, Lewis & Clark put a pair of runs on the board when Jamie Moon led off with a single up the middle before advancing to second via a wild pitch. LCC's Sheree Muira advanced everyone a base with a single to short before Moon scored one batter later on a wild pitch. DeVincenzi brought home the visiting Pioneers' final run of the game via a single to center field that scored pinch-runner Michaela Satter from third to make the score 6-2 in favor of the host Warriors.

In the top of the fifth inning, Corban got a lead off single down the right field line from Schell before senior Karlee Sisler (Corvallis, Ore.) roped a double to straight away center field allowing Schell to score all the way from first. Following a pitching change by Lewis & Clark, Pierce registered a one-out single to right field that advanced Sisler to third. Following a stolen base by Pierce and a hit by pitch to Emerick, Gaylord drew a bases loaded walk before Franke ended the game with a double to center field that scored both Sisler and Pierce to give the Warriors a 10-2 mercy-run victory.

Franke went a perfect 3-for-3 with five RBI to lead Corban offensively, while Baggarley and Gaylord registered two hits each. Kollaer, Schell, Sisler, Pierce, and Emerick recorded a hit each, while Baggarley went the distance in the circle allowing two runs (both earned) on five hits to go along with a pair of K's.

With the sweep, Corban improves to 10-8 overall versus Lewis & Clark's winless record of 0-7. The Warriors will return to action on Saturday, March 21st, when they visit the Wildcats of Linfield for an afternoon double header beginning at 1:00 p.m. in McMinnville.
