Warriors Open Conference Schedule With Sweep of Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech

BOX SCORES – GAME #1 | GAME #2

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore.
– In the opening double header of the Cascade Collegiate Conference portion of its schedule, Corban's softball team swept nationally-ranked Oregon Tech, 9-7 & 7-5, behind the pitching performance of freshman Brittany Wagner (Oregon City, Ore.) and a combined six home runs by the visiting Warriors Friday afternoon at the OIT Softball Complex.

After playing 22 non-conference games, the Warriors took the field for the first time all season in conference action against the defending Cascade Collegiate Conference champion Owls of Oregon Tech.

In the opener, the host Hustlin' Owls scored four runs off three hits that included a three-run double by Katie King in the opening inning before Corban got on the scoreboard.

In the top of the fourth inning, freshman Twyla Baggarley (Hillsboro, Ore.) drew a bases loaded walk to pull the visiting Warriors within three runs (4-1).

After Oregon Tech scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-1 lead following a two-run double to left field by Brittany Warner, Corban struck for five runs in the top of the sixth inning to pull within a single run (7-6). Sophomore Jennifer Kollaer (Albany, Ore.) and junior Rebecca Franke (Pendleton, Ore.) hit back-to-back home runs to go along with junior Jessica Pierce's (Kennewick, Wash.) fielder's choice RBI. Kollaer's fourth long ball of the season was a three-run shot, while Franke wasted no time in equaling Kollaer's team-lead with her fourth four-bagger of the season via a solo shot.

One inning later, Franke tied the game at 7-all with a run-scoring double to left field before junior Rachel Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) put the visiting Warriors up by a single run (8-7) with a triple to right field that allowed Franke to score.

Clinging to a one-run lead, Corban got an insurance run off the bat of Baggarley via her fourth home run of the season over the left field fence to put the visiting Warriors up two runs (9-7).

Wagner got Oregon Tech in order in the seventh inning, as Corban opened the conference season with a two-run victory (9-7) in today's opener.

In the night cap, Corban struck first thanks to a run-scoring single by Steigleman that allowed Kollaer to cross the plate following her one-out single and gave the visiting Warriors an early 1-0 lead.

Oregon Tech tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning when King singled to right field, which allowed Andria Wheatley to score after she doubled to center field.

Corban re-took the lead for good in the top of the second inning when Baggarley hit her then-team-leading fifth home run of the season to left field to give the visiting Warriors a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Oregon Tech loaded the bases with one out before second-year head coach Nathan Ohta brought in Wagner to relieve Baggarley. Wagner got two straight outs to end the host Owls' threat and allowed Corban to cling to its one-run lead.

With its slim one-run lead, the visiting Warriors used the strength of back-to-back home runs by Kollaer and Franke in the top of the sixth inning en route to scoring five runs on just two hits. Corban's opening run came when sophomore Jessie Jones (Gladstone, Ore.) drove in Wagner on an error by OIT's second baseman before Kollaer belted her second three-run home run of the afternoon to put the visiting Warriors up 6-1. Franke followed up Kollaer's fifth home run of the season with her fifth long ball this year via her second solo shot of the game, which landed beyond the left field fence and put Corban up 7-1.

After neither team scored in their next at-bat, Oregon Tech struck for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning off five hits. The highlight came off the bat of former McNary graduate Sunceray Titus via a two-run single that scored Wheatley and Amber Sinicrope to cap the game's scoring. Fortunately for the Warriors, Oregon Tech could not push any more runs across the plate despite Brooke Cole advancing to third with two outs.

Offensively, Corban was led by Kollaer's combined 5-for-7 performance with four runs scored and six RBI. Along with Kollaer, Franke went 5-for-6 with four runs scored and three RBI to go along with six other Warriors that recorded at least one hit on the afternoon.

Senior Erin Sailors (Anchorage, Alaska) started Game #1 for Corban and went the opening 4.0 innings allowing seven earned runs on six hits before turning the ball over to Wagner for the final 3.0 innings. Thanks to her one-hit pitching performance, Wagner earned her fourth win of the season as she held OIT scoreless in helping Corban to a come-from-behind victory. Baggarley took the circle in Game #2 and went the opening 4.1 innings allowing one earned run before Wagner came on to pick up her team-leading fourth save of the season.

Oregon Tech was led by Wheatley's combined 4-for-7 performance that included four runs scored and two RBI. Amber Knight appeared in both games for the Hustlin' Owls in the circle, as she went a combined 2.2 innings and allowed Corban to score only one earned run.

With today's sweep, Corban improves to 14-10 overall, 2-0 in conference play. Meanwhile, Oregon Tech falls to 8-9 overall, 0-2 in conference action. The Warriors return to the diamond on Saturday, March 28th, when they travel to Ashland to take on the Raiders of Southern Oregon in a mid-morning double header that begins at 11:00 a.m.
