BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – In a hard-fought and physical match, Corban's men's soccer team could not overcome a three-goal deficit at halftime before falling to against the visiting Knights of Warner Pacific by the final score of 4-0 Friday afternoon on Warrior Field.
Freshman goalkeeper
James Myrvold (Sandy, Ore.) registered a game-high six saves in between the pipes for Corban in 64 minutes of action before heading to the bench for the final 26 minutes of the game.
Corban nearly struck first in the fifth minute when sophomore
Aaron Kinnes (Gladstone, Ore.) unleashed a shot from 12 yards out that barely missed the upper right corner of the goal. From that point on, control seemed to go to the visiting Knights.
Warner Pacific would get on the board first in the 15th minute, as Alija Sacirovic dribbled through the defense and sent a rolling shot into the lower right corner for the game's opening score.
Just over ten minutes later, the Knights would extend their lead to two goals when Jordan Selland teamed with Julian Esquivel on a one-timer over the out-stretched arm of Corban's goalkeeper for a 2-0 Warner Pacific lead.
In the 28th minute, Warner Pacific capped the first half scoring when Tarik Subasic received a pass from Sacirovic and one-timed a shot from six yards out into the lower right corner following a short pass.
Corban would have one last chance before halftime, as the Warriors were awarded a penalty kick in the 35th minute following a Warner Pacific foul in the box. Unfortunately, junior
Gus Bermudez (Culver City, Calif.) unleashed a shot towards the upper left corner that was swatted away by Warner Pacific's goalie and then cleared over the end line by the Knights' defense.
Warner Pacific would close out the game's scoring in the 50th minute when Ryan O'Dell teamed with Jameson Jones for the Knights' fourth and final goal of the game. The scoring play began with Jones threaded a through ball along the end line and underneath a diving Corban keeper to a wide-open O'Dell, who deposited the ball into the back of the net via a dive that got to the ball a split second before a Warrior defender could clear the shot away.
Corban would get a few chances over the game's final 40-plus minutes, as Kinnes took a free kick from just outside the box in the 73rd minute only to have the ball end up in the hands of Warner Pacific's goalkeeper for the final gasp of hope.
Along with Myrvold's performance between the pipes, fellow freshman goalie
Spencer Anderson (Glendale, Ariz.) saw some action in goal for Corban recording one save on the afternoon. Meanwhile, Warner Pacific's Sean Ervin registered five saves en route to picking up the win for the Knights.
With today's outcome, Corban falls to 3-5-1 overall and 2-3-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. On the other hand, Warner Pacific improves to 3-5-1 overall and 3-2-0 in league games. The Warriors will return to the field tomorrow afternoon – Saturday, October 2nd – against the visiting Coyotes of The College of Idaho beginning at 2:30 p.m. on Warrior Field.
