Franke Leads Warriors to Sweep of Pioneers

BOX SCORES – GAME #1 | GAME #2

PORTLAND, Ore.
– Senior Rebecca Franke (Pendleton, Ore.) went a combined 4-for-7 at the plate with five runs batted in and two runs scored, as Corban's softball team opened the 2010 season with a sweep of NCAA Division III member Lewis & Clark, 10-1 & 6-1, Saturday afternoon at the Houston Sports Complex.

With the season opening double header sweep, Corban begins its 2010 campaign at 2-0 while Lewis & Clark starts out at 0-2.

In Game #1, Franke led a trio of Warriors that included junior Jessie Jones (Gladstone, Ore.) and freshman Erica Fitzgerald (Beaverton, Ore.) with two hits apiece. Franke, Jones, and freshman Liane DeHart (Kent, Wash.) all scored two runs, while Franke and Fitzgerald drove in three runs each in the victory.

The night cap was a coming out party for DeHart, as she registered three hits in four at-bats to go along with one run scored. Franke, Fitzgerald, and a pair of seniors – Kacie Emerick (Bellingham, Wash.) and Jessica Pierce (Kennewick, Wash.) – all registered two hits in the finale, while Jones and Franke drove in two runs each.

Game #1 - Corban 10, Lewis & Clark 1 (5 innings)

After a scoreless two innings in Game #1, Corban exploded for 10 runs in its next two at-bats. In the top of the third inning, Pierce led off with a single to right field before Jones followed with an infield single that advanced Pierce to second. The very next batter – DeHart – would reach via an error by the Pioneers' second baseman that allowed Pierce to score and Jones to advance to third. Wasting no time, Franke brought home the eventual game-winning run via a single to second base that allowed Jones to score. After a double steal, a single, and a pair of pop outs, sophomore Twyla Baggarley (Hillsboro, Ore.) brought home a pair of runs with a single to center field that made the score 5-0 in favor of the visiting Warriors.

In the top of the fourth inning, Corban's first three batters – Pierce, Jones, and DeHart – all reached base safely before Franke stepped to the plate and roped a two-run single that allowed Pierce and Jones to score. After two pop outs and a Franke steal, Fitzgerald stepped to the plate and belted her first collegiate home run – a three-run round-tripper – that capped Corban's scoring and plated 10 unanswered Warrior runs.

With the score 10-0 in favor of the visiting team, Lewis & Clark got one run back in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a run-scoring single to center field by Sara Standish. Unfortunately, Corban's pitching and defense was too strong for the host Pioneers as the final difference was nine runs (10-1).

Corban junior Makenzie Marchbanks (Sweet Home, Ore.) went the distance in the circle pitching 5.0 innings allowing one earned run on six hits to go along with a game-high seven strikeouts.

Michaela Satter led Lewis & Clark with a 2-for-2 performance with one run scored, while Paige McFeeley pitched all 5.0 innings for the Pioneers allowing 10 runs (all earned) on 11 hits to go along with a pair of K's.

Game #2 - Corban 6, Lewis & Clark 1

In the night cap, Corban began the scoring in the top of the third inning when DeHart registered a two-out single to third before stealing second and scoring on a Franke double to right center.

After three at-bats without any runs scoring, Corban plated the eventual game-winning run in the top of the fifth inning thanks to a Franke triple to center field that scored Jones, who had reached base thanks to a fielder's choice.

Lewis & Clark would pull within a single run (2-1) in the bottom of the fifth inning when Gabby Castro singled to right field allowing J.T. Mullins to score the Pioneers' only run of Game #2.

Wasting no time, Corban put three more runs on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning thanks to a two-run single by Jones and a RBI bunt single by freshman Stephanie Nippert (Rocklin, Calif.) that scored Pierce to make the score 5-1 in favor of the visiting Warriors.

Corban rounded out the game's scoring in the top of the seventh inning when Fitzgerald registered a lead off single down the left field line before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt. After stealing third, Fitzgerald was brought home on an Emerick single for the final run of the afternoon.

Sophomore Brittany Wagner (Oregon City, Ore.) went the distance in the circle for Corban allowing one earned run on six hits to go along with a game-high two strikeouts.

Lewis & Clark was led by Standish's 2-for-3 performance in the finale, while Kristin Breninger pitched all 7.0 innings allowing six earned runs on 14 hits with one K.

Corban will return to the diamond on Friday, February 12th, at the Simpson University Tournament in Redding, California. The Warriors will play three games on Friday beginning with tournament-host Simpson at 9:00 a.m. at Big League Dreams Field.
