CLACKAMAS, Ore. – Senior
Rebecca Franke (Pendleton, Ore.) and freshman
Stephanie Nippert (Rocklin, Calif.) collected four hits each that included a pair of 3-for-4 performances in the night cap of Saturday's double header, but it was not enough as Corban's softball team fell to the NAIA's No. 9-ranked Simon Fraser, 5-2 in nine innings & 7-5, at Hood View Park.
With today's results, Corban falls to 7-12 overall and Simon Fraser improves to 8-2 this season.
Franke went a combined 4-for-7 at the plate with two runs scored, while Nippert was 4-for-8 with one home run, two runs scored, and four runs batted in. Senior
Jessica Schell (Portland, Ore.) and freshman
Erica Fitzgerald (Beaverton, Ore.) also collected two hits on the afternoon, while three other Warrior freshman –
Tamara Feb (Oregon City, Ore.),
Tess Bennett (Sutherlin, Ore.), and
Liane DeHart (Kent, Wash.) – each had one hit in the twin bill.
In the circle, junior
Makenzie Marchbanks (Sweet Home, Ore.) went the distance in the opener allowing five unearned runs on 11 hits to go along with a game-high nine strikeouts. In the night cap, sophomore
Brittany Wagner (Oregon City, Ore.) pitched the first 2.0 innings allowing six runs (four earned) on five hits before turning the ball over to fellow sophomore
Twyla Baggarley (Hillsboro, Ore.). The second-year Warrior would pitch the final 5.0 innings allowing one earned run on five hits to go along with one K.
GAME #1 – SIMON FRASER 5, CORBAN 2 (9 INNINGS)
In Saturday's opening game, neither team would score until the top of the fourth inning when the visiting Clan plated one run on Jessie Harris' single to right field that scored Haley Cicchetti following her lead off walk.
Trailing by only one run in the bottom of the sixth inning, Corban tied the game at 1-1 thanks to Schell's first home run of the season that landed just beyond the fence in center field.
Neither team would score again in regulation forcing extra innings where Simon Fraser plated four runs in the top of the ninth inning when the Clan loaded the bases with two straight hits and a Warrior throwing error. Leah Riske would then bring home SFU's second run with a ground out RBI that scored Chrissy Caviglia before Cicchetti brought in the eventual game-winning run with a ground out to short for a 3-1 lead. Simon Fraser's final two runs would come via a single by Jess Martin that scored Carly Moir and Brittany Mayers for a 5-1 Clan lead.
In its final at-bat, Corban would get back-to-back hits from Nippert and Feb before Bennett drove in her first run as a Warrior two batters later for the final run of the opener.
Simon Fraser was led offensively by Mayers' 4-for-5 performance, while Caviglia and Durrant collected two hits each. SFU's Jennifer Van Egdom picked up the extra inning victory, as she pitched the opening 8.0 innings allowing two earned runs on five hits to go along with a team-leading five strikeouts. Myriam Poirier would pitch the Clan's final inning allowing no runs on one hit to go along with two K's.
GAME #2 – SIMON FRASER 7, CORBAN 5
The finale would begin with Corban scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning when DeHart lead off with a walk and Franke singled to left field to put runners at first and second with no outs. One batter later, Nippert would bring home DeHart with a single before Franke scored the Warriors' second run on a Clan throwing error.
In the top of the second inning, Simon Fraser would explode for six runs on two three-run home runs by Durrant and Kelsey Haberl for a 6-2 lead.
Two innings later, Simon Fraser would plate its seventh and final run when Mayers singled to score Harris after her lead off single.
Neither team would score again until the bottom of the seventh inning when Corban got a pair of two outs singles from Franke and Fitzgerald before Nippert connected on her second home run of the season via a three-run bomb that concluded the day's scoring at 7-5.
Simon Fraser was led by Harris, who went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Meanwhile, Haberl and Durrant both collected two hits with three runs batted in. Poirier would pitch 5.1 innings for the Clan allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits, while Cara Lukawesky took the ball for 1.2 innings allowing three earned runs on four hits for Simon Fraser.
Corban will return to the diamond on Monday, March 15th, for a mid-afternoon double header against California Pacific Conference member Simpson beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Warrior Field.
