Warriors Competing at NAIA Championships

MARION, Ind. – The 2010 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships began Thursday for Corban's men's and women's track & field teams, as the Warriors took to the track in four different events at the IWU Outdoor Track Complex.

The Warriors' women's 4x100 meter relay that consisted of freshman Jacquelyn Taylor (Mt. Vernon, Wash.), sophomore Jocelynn Smith (Yakima, Wash.), freshman Eliya Kohl (Salem, Ore.), and junior Bianca Davis (Ontario, Ore.) began the day and did not qualify for the semifinals after finishing eighth in Heat #3 with a time of 48.70.

Despite setting a school-record in the event, Corban's relay team finished 27th overall missing the semifinal round by less than one second with the top 16 teams moving on.

Oklahoma Baptist turned in the best time overall, as the Bison won Heat #3 with a combined team performance of 45.62 that barely bettered Wayland Baptist's Heat #2 winning time of 45.98. Fellow Cascade Collegiate Conference member Concordia qualified for the semifinals with a time of 47.59, which was good enough for a third place finish in Heat #2 and the 10th best time overall.

Next up for the Warriors was freshman Jenny Harman (Salem, Ore.) in the women's javelin. In a field that included the NAIA record holder, Liz Gleadle of British Columbia, Harman unleashed a throw of 35.97 meters (118-feet) on her second attempt to finish 10th in her flight. Unfortunately, Harman's throw did not move her into the nine-person field for the finals therefore concluding her first-ever national championship appearance, as she finished 27th overall.

Gleadle ended up winning the event with a national-record throw of 56.09 meters (184-feet), while fellow Cascade Collegiate Conference member Kai Schmidt of Concordia finished seventh overall with a throw of 42.61 meters (139-ffet, 9-inches).

Smith would be the next Warrior on the track running in the 400 meter hurdles prelims. The second-year Warrior would finish seventh in Heat #1 with a time of 1:05.43, which was 19th overall and missed qualifying for the semifinals by .04 seconds.

Bethel's Irene Kangai posted the best time with a 1:00.73 en route to winning Heat #2, while fellow CCC member Emily McCutchan grabbed the final spot in the semifinals with an 18th place finish in a time of 1:05.39.

Rounding out the day for the Warriors was junior David Anderson (Salem, Ore.) in the men's 400 meter hurdles preliminaries. Running in the same heat as the best 400 meter hurdlers in the country, Anderson finished fifth with a time of 55.43 and missed advancing to the semifinals by .29 seconds thanks to a 21st place finish overall.

Nick Dodson of Shorter College posted the best quarterfinal time en route to winning Heat #2 in a time of 52.05, while Southern Oregon's Dennis Olstedt was the lone Cascade Collegiate Conference runner to advance to the next round thanks to a time of 54.44 and a 15th place finish overall.

Corban will return to competition at the NAIA National Championships tomorrow – Friday, May 28th – when freshman Christy Mosier (Bend, Ore.) competes in the women's shot put finals beginning at approximately 10:00 AM (Pacific Standard Time).
