BOX SCORE
PORTLAND, Ore. – Senior
Devin Chaney (Helena, Mt.) tallied two goals in the first half, but Corban's men's soccer team came up short against Warner Pacific, 3-2, Saturday at David Douglas High School.
Offensive opportunities came early and often for both sides, as the host Knights were the first to break through courtesy of a Ryan O'Dell strike from close range in the 7th minute on a well placed cross from Alija Sacirovic.
The Warriors found their first goal on a counter-attack in the 20th minute. The breakout was finished by Chaney, who found the back of the net after receiving a pass from junior
Tyler Hagen (Silverton, Ore.).
Corban gained momentum as the Warriors pressed the Warner Pacific defense looking for the lead. Corban succeeded in gaining the advantage in the 33rd minute, as a mix-up in the Knight center defense allowed Chaney to pounce and slot home an unassisted goal past a diving Drew Bonifacio. The Warriors went into the half with a 6-5 edge in shots to go with their two-goals-to-one lead.
Regrouping after halftime, Warner Pacific equalized in the 66th minute. The Knights connected several passes at the edge of the penalty area leading to a 12 yard shot from Brandon Tatum. The attempt clanged off the crossbar and the Warriors looked to be safe, but the ball fell to Sacirovic who did not miss and tied the game at 2-2.
The newly knotted score proved to open the game even more in the late stages. Jameson Jones scored the game winner for Warner Pacific at the 81:56 mark, flicking home an 8 yard shot from right in front. Sacirovic earned his second assist of the day on the play after a nice buildup down the left side of the pitch.
Corban provided some late drama and nearly tied the game, but freshman
Derik Chaney's (Helena, Mont.) free kick from 25 yards hit the post and the Knight defense was able to clear the ball without any harm.
The Warriors tallied 10 shots over the course of the match, while the Knights fired 14 shots of their own. Bonifacio snared four saves en route to earn the win between the pipes for Warner Pacific, while Corban freshman net minder
Steven Mason (Santa Rosa, Calif.) stopped three shots to aid Corban's cause.
With the loss, the Warriors falls to 5-5 overall and 3-3 in CCC contests. Meanwhile, Warner Pacific's victory pushes the Knights to 6-2-1 overall and 4-1-1 in Cascade Conference play. Corban will return to action on Saturday, October 8th, when the Warriors host conference rival Northwest Christian in a contest scheduled to kick off at 12:00 p.m. on Warrior Field.
