Warriors Compete in 12-Team Simpson Invite

REDDING, Calif. – For the second straight season, Corban's softball team took part in the Simpson Invitational at Big League Dreams Field in Northern California.

After going 2-4 in six games last season, the Warriors were only able to come home with one win this season thanks to a 4-2 victory over California Pacific Conference member Menlo on Saturday.

On Friday, Corban took on the NAIA's No. 1-ranked California Baptist, tournament-host and nationally-ranked Simpson, and William Jessup. The Warriors would conclude play on Saturday against Menlo, the NAIA's No. 6-ranked Concordia-Irvine, and host Simpson.

GAME #1 - California Baptist 6, Corban 3 | BOX SCORE

Against the nation's No. 1-ranked Lancers of California Baptist, junior Emma Winckler (Eltopia, Wash.) pitched a complete game allowing six runs (two earned) on six hits to go along with a pair of hits by junior Abbie Pynch (Stayton, Ore.) and Erica Fitzgerald (Beaverton, Ore.).

Corban would strike first in the top of the second inning, as freshman Lounette Jackson (Escalon, Calif.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded that brought home fellow freshman Courtney Castronovo (Salem, Ore.) following her one out single to give the Warriors an early 1-0 lead.

The nation's No. 1-ranked California Baptist would waste no time though in taking the lead, as the Lancers scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning with the heart-breaking hit coming off the bat of Caty Reeves via a three-run double that gave CBU a three-run lead (4-1).

Corban would pull within two runs (4-2) in the top of the fifth inning when Pynch executed a perfect double steal along with Fitzgerald after Pynch singled to lead off the inning before coming home with two outs on the stolen base.

California Baptist would cap its scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning when Reeves registered her fourth RBI of the game before Tina Galinato drew a bases loaded walk making the score 6-2 in favor of the nationally-ranked Lancers.

The Warriors would close out the game's scoring in the top of the sixth inning when Castronovo led off the inning by reaching base via an error before advancing to second during the next at-bat. Sophomore Shauna Boudreaux (Donald, Ore.) would then bring Castronovo home with a single making the score 6-3.

California Baptist was led offensively by Briana Correl with a 2-for-4 performance with a run scored, while Reeves drove in all four runs for the Lancers. In the circle, Tory Ferriera went the opening 6.0 innings allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits en route to earning the win before turning the ball over to Emma Holden for the final three outs to pick up the save.

With the result, Corban falls to 1-2 overall and California Baptist remains unbeaten at 5-0. The Warriors will remain on the field to take on Invitational-host Simpson beginning

GAME #2 - Simpson 3, Corban 2 | BOX SCORE

Playing against the tournament-host Redhawks, a pitching dual would ensue over the opening five innings as both teams would combined for one hit.

In the top of the sixth inning, Simpson would final break the scoreless tie with a two-run double by Brooke Downs that scored Nicole Hutchins and Chelsea Dunn for a 2-0 lead.

The Warriors would waste no time in tying the game at 2-2, as Pynch led off the inning with a single before sophomore Stephanie Nippert (Rocklin, Calif.) belted her first home run of the season to make it a new ballgame.

Unfortunately, Simpson's Shaley Madruga would not allow Corban much breathing room as she led off the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run that made the score 3-2 with only one more at-bat for the Warriors.

In its half of the seventh inning, Corban would get a lead off single from sophomore Rachel Conard (Merlin, Ore.) but could not move her any closer to home plate as the Warriors fell to the host Redhawks by a single run, 3-2.

Senior Makenzie Marchbanks (Sweet Home, Ore.) went the distance for the Warriors allowing three earned runs on five hits, while Simpson's Hayley Rodriguez also pitched all 7.0 innings allowing two earned runs also on five hits with a game-high eight strikeouts en route to picking up the win.

GAME #3 - William Jessup 6, Corban 4 | BOX SCORE

Taking William Jessup for the second time in just over 24 hours, Corban could not keep the designated home team off the scoreboard as the Warriors of WJU put six unanswered runs on the board over the opening six innings with the highlight coming in the first inning via a two-run home run off the bat of Samantha McMahan.

Corban would score its runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, as Winckler drove in the Warriors' first two runs via a double in the sixth that scored Nippert and Fitzgerald. One inning later, Nippert would bring home Pynch and Jackson with a two-run single that capped the day's scoring for Corban in a 6-4 loss at the hands of William Jessup.

Marchbanks would go the opening 4.1 innings for Corban allowing five earned runs on five hits before turning the ball over to junior Brittany Wagner (Oregon City, Ore.) for the final 2.2 innings, as she allowed just one earned run on four hits.

William Jessup was led offensively by Samantha Futrell and McMahan with a pair of hits each, while McMahan accounted for half of the Warriors' runs. In the circle, Erin Houston would go the distance for William Jessup allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits to go along with a game-high eight K's.

GAME #4 - Corban 4, Menlo 2 | BOX SCORE

In the Warriors' opener on Saturday, Marchbanks was involved in a pitching dual that earned her the third complete game of her season to go along with a pair of home runs by Nippert and Winckler. Nippert, Conard, and Castronovo would collect two hits each with the freshman outfielder driving in a pair of runs.

Corban would get on the board first in the top of the second inning thanks to Winckler's lead-off home run to left center field before Castronovo hit the second of back-to-back doubles to drive home Conard following her two-bagger.

Menlo would tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second inning when Jessica Soliai stole home before Nadia Le'i brought home Tricia Davidson with a bases loaded walk that capped the Oaks' scoring.

The Warriors wasted no time in taking the lead once again in the top of the third inning when Nippert belted her second home run of the season over the center field wall that proved to be the game-winning RBI. Three batters later, Castronovo plated Conard once again after the duo registered back-to-back doubles to make the score 4-2 in favor of Corban.

Over the final four-and-a-half innings, both teams would combined to register five hits with neither team crossing the plate again.

Marchbanks would earn her second win of the season pitching all 7.0 innings allowing two earned runs on seven hits to go along with a pair of strikeouts.

Menlo was led offensively by Ululani Reyes with a 2-for-4 performance, while Davidson went the distance in the circle for the Oaks allowing four earned runs on eight hits to go along with a game-high three K's.

With today's result, Corban improves to 2-4 on the season and Menlo remains winless at 0-6. The Warriors will continue play at the Simpson Invitational at 4:30 p.m. against the NAIA's No. 6-ranked Eagles of Concordia-Irvine.

GAME #5 - Concordia-Irvine 4, Corban 2 | BOX SCORE

Against the NAIA's No. 6-ranked Eagles, Corban would get all of its offensive firepower off the bat of Nippert via her team-leading third home run of the season. Meanwhile, the Warriors got their second straight complete game off the day with Winckler in the circle.

Corban would strike first in the top of the third inning when sophomore Liane DeHart (Kent, Wash.) led off with a single to right field before coming home on Nippert's two-run home run over the left field wall making the score 2-0 in favor of the Warriors.

Unfortunately, Corban's lead would not hold very long as the nationally-ranked Eagles struck for three runs in the bottom of the third inning via five hits in CUI's first six batters. Jenna Jorgenson would bring home the Eagles' first run on a single to right field that scored Katie Carson. One batter later, Alyssa Erickson drove in Samantha Perez with an infield single before Alicia Lucatero capped CUI's scoring with a bunt single that plated Jorgenson to make the score 3-2 in favor of the nationally-ranked Eagles.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Jorgenson would drive home her second run of the game on a single to left field that scored Carson and capped the game's scoring with the Eagles holding a two-run advantage (4-2).

Corban's only other scoring opportunity would come in the top of the sixth inning, as the Warriors got two runners on base with two outs but could not capitalize.

Nippert was the only Warrior to record more than one hit, while Winckler went the distance in the circle allowing four earned runs on eight hits to go along with two strikeouts.

Concordia-Irvine was led offensively by Jorgenson with a 2-for-3 performance that included a pair of RBI. The Eagles' Morgan Reiter went the opening 2.0 innings allowing two earned runs on five hits before turning the ball over to Courtney Young for the final 5.0 innings, who gave up just one hit to go along with a game-high eight K's.

With this afternoon's result, Corban falls to 2-5 overall and Concordia-Irvine closes out its play at the Simpson Invitational improving to 9-1 overall. The Warriors will close out their play in Northern California later this evening in the finale of the Simpson Invitational against the host Redhawks beginning at 7:00 p.m.

GAME #6 - Simpson 3, Corban 0 | BOX SCORE
