Warriors Sweep Beacons in Mid-Week Twin Bill

EUGENE, Ore.
 – Senior Makenzie Marchbanks (Sweet Home, Ore.) and junior Brittany Wagner (Oregon City, Ore.) pitched a pair of complete games to go along with a pair of home runs by sophomore Stephanie Nippert (Rocklin, Calif.), as Corban's softball team swept rival Northwest Christian, 7-3 & 8-4, Wednesday at James Park.

Sophomore Tamara Feb (Oregon City, Ore.) led the Warriors' offensive attack with three hits, while five other Corban players – Nippert, junior Abbie Pynch (Stayton, Ore.), junior Emma Winckler (Eltopia, Wash.), sophomore Liane DeHart (Kent, Wash.), and freshman Courtney Castronovo (Salem, Ore.) – registered two hits each in the pair of wins. Nippert accounted for five of the Warriors' runs on the afternoon, while Feb drove in four and sophomore Erica Fitzgerald (Beaverton, Ore.) registered a pair of RBI.

GAME #1 – CORBAN 7, NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN 3

In the opener, Corban jumped out to a quick five-run lead thanks to a lead off single by Pynch followed by a fielding error by NCU before Nippert belted her team-leading 10th home run of the season well beyond the outfield fence for an early 3-0 Warrior lead. After another NCU error, Feb unleashed her third home run of the season via a two-run shot over the left field fence that extended Corban's lead to five runs (5-0) after its opening at-bat.

Northwest Christian would get a pair of runs back in the bottom of the first inning when Megan Mazanec connected on her second home run of the season over the left field fence to make the score 5-2 in favor of the visiting team.

In the top of the second inning, Corban would add another two runs on RBI hits by sophomore Rachel Conard (Merlin, Ore.) via a run-scoring single to right field before Feb drove in her third run of the game via a single down the right field line that brought home Nippert from third for a 7-2 Warrior lead.

The host Beacons would add the game's final run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Gabby Stover registered a run-scoring single to center field that allowed Cassie Bishop to score from second for the final difference of 7-3 in favor of Corban.

Feb led the Warriors' offense thanks to a 2-for-3 showing with three RBI, while Nippert with 1-for-3 with two runs scored and three runs batted in. Marchbanks went the distance in the circle for Corban allowing three earned runs on six hits to go along with three strikeouts, as the senior right-hander picked up her team-leading sixth win of the season.

Northwest Christian got a team-leading 2-for-4 showing from Stover, while Brooke Davis went the distance for the Beacons allowing seven runs (five earned) on six hits with a game-high five K's.

GAME #2 – CORBAN 8, NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN 4

In the finale, Corban scored all eight of its runs in the opening four innings with the opening two runs coming via Nippert's 11th home run of the season in the top of the first. The second-year Warrior's home run tied the single-season home run record that she equaled last season as a freshman. Along with Nippert's conference-leading home runs, Fitzgerald drove in a pair of runs with a RBI single to center field that extended the Warriors' lead to 4-0.

Corban's next at-bat would produce another two runs, as Feb drove in Pynch with a sacrifice fly to center field before Winckler singled up the middle allowing DeHart to score from third and extended the Warriors' lead to 6-0.

Northwest Christian would get two back in the bottom of the second when Jazzmyne Villaruel drove home the Beacons' opening run via a ground out before Bishop ripped a double to center field allowing Kalyssa Koontz to score from second making the score 6-2 in favor of the visiting team.

The Warriors would put another run on the board in the top of the third inning when Pynch brought home Fitzgerald on a sacrifice fly to shallow right field that extended Corban's lead to 7-2 after two-and-a-half innings of play.

Northwest Christian would get another run in the bottom of the third inning, as Laynee Bevens ripped a RBI single down the left field line allowing Dani Gehrke to score NCU's third run from 60 feet away to make the difference four runs (7-3).

In the top of the fourth inning, Corban tacked another run on the board when Feb ripped a run-scoring single to center field that brought home Nippert following her lead off walk making the score 8-3 in favor of the Warriors.

Northwest Christian drove in the game's final run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Davis doubled down the left field line allowing Ally Mittleider to score from second making the final score 8-4 for Corban.

Pynch and Winckler led the Warriors' offense with a pair of hits each, while Nippert, Feb, and Fitzgerald each drove in two runs. Wagner picked up her first complete game of the season allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits in 7.0 innings of work with a game-high three strikeouts.

The host Beacons were led by Gehrke and Mazanec with two hits each, while Becca Lillegard went the opening 1.1 innings of work allowing six earned runs on six hits with a team-high three K's before turning the ball over to Koontz for the final 5.2 innings of work.

With today's results, Corban improves to 14-9 overall and 6-2 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action. Meanwhile, Northwest Christian falls to 7-13 overall and 1-5 in league games. The Warriors will return to the diamond on Friday, April 1st, against the Raiders of Southern Oregon beginning at 2:00 p.m. at University Field in Ashland.
