Big Second Half Lifts Warriors Over Owls of OIT

BOX SCORE

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Four second half goals by a quartet of Warriors helped lift Corban's men's soccer team to a three-goal victory over the host Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech, 5-2, Wednesday at Trevor Derrah Field.

"This was an important win tonight and one that did not come easily," said head coach Paul Meehan. "It is difficult to win on the road, and I feel our guys showed great composure to battle back from being down a goal. We learn something everytime we go out and play and we come away with a great number of positives from this match. There's good reason for our guys to be proud of their performance tonight."

The score was tied at 1-1 heading into halftime thanks to goals in the 16th minute by OIT's Oscar Alonso-Ayala and Corban freshman Josh Hamilton (Portland, Ore.) just over 20 minutes later off an assist by sophomore Steffan Bard (Oregon City, Ore.) at the 36:56 mark.

Over the final 45 minutes, the visiting Warriors erupted for four goals that included three straight scores within a 15-minute span that would result in a 4-1 Corban lead.

Junior Tyler Hagen (Silverton, Ore.) began Corban's second half scoring with his team-leading fourth goal of the season at the 53:32 mark. The 5-foot-7 midfielder would collect a deflection 10 feet away from the net and in one clean motion chipped the ball up and over Oregon Tech's keeper for the Warriors' second goal of the night.

Just over 13 minutes later, freshman Derik Chaney (Helena, Mont.) got into the scoring act when he netted his team-high tying fourth goal of the season off an assist by senior Nolan Dempster (Hillsboro, Ore.). The senior defender would begin the play with a long pass to an awaiting Chaney, who beat OIT's keeper for the eventual game-winning goal.

A mere 41 seconds later, Hamilton netted his second goal of the night off a combo assist by junior Aaron Kinnes (Gladstone, Ore.) and Hagen at the 67:15 mark. The junior combo would use quick passing to elude Oregon Tech's defense before finding Hamilton with another quick pass before scoring Corban's fourth goal of the night.

Oregon Tech would cut the Warriors' lead in half in the 83rd minute when Rey Chavolla teamed with Victor Corona on his second assist of the night making the score 4-2 in favor of Corban. Corona would begin the scoring play by sending a cross pass to Chavolla, who chipped the ball up and over the Warriors' keeper before unleashing a shot from 20 yards out on the run for the goal.

In the waning seconds of the game, Corban would add an insurance goal when Kinnes scored his fourth goal of the season at the 89:46 mark. The junior midfielder would collect a loose ball and rifle it past OIT's net-minder for the Warriors' fifth and final goal of the night.

Overall, Corban registered two more shots than Oregon Tech (20-to-18) with 12 coming in the final 45 minutes of play. The visiting Warriors also controlled the offensive flow of the game collecting one more corner kick than the Owls (7-to-6), while also putting three more shots on goal (11-to-8).

Corban would use a pair of goalkeeper – freshman Steven Mason (Santa Rosa, Calif.) and sophomore Spencer Anderson (Glendale, Ariz.) – with Mason playing the opening 80-plus minutes with four saves before Anderson registered a pair of saves over the final nine-plus minutes. Oregon Tech would rely on net-minder Loren Jessen for the entire game, as the Owls' keeper tallied a game-high six saves despite allowing all five goals.

With tonight's win, Corban improves to 5-4-0 overall and 3-2-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Oregon Tech falls to 3-6-0 overall and 1-4-0 in league games. The Warriors will continue their two-game road trip on Saturday, October 1st, against Warner Pacific beginning at 1:00 p.m. at David Douglas High School in Portland.
