Warriors Open Northwest Cup With Win Over Thunderbirds

CLACKAMAS, Ore. – Junior Amy Greenough allowed only one hit over the opening four innings, as Corban's No. 23-ranked softball team opened up play at the annual Northwest Cup with a 5-1 win over the University of British Columbia Saturday at Hood View Park.

With the win, Corban improves to 7-2 on the season and British Columbia falls to 3-10-1 overall.

Along with Greenough's performance in the circle, juniors Stephanie Nippert and Liane DeHart each collected a pair of hits with Nippert registering her sixth home run of the season to go along with a game-high three runs batted in. Five other Warriors – senior Emma Winckler, senior Abbie Pynch, junior Brittany Chestnut, sophomore Courtney Castronovo, and sophomore Lounette Jackson – all recorded a hit, while freshman right-hander Jessica Slate relieved Greenough for the final three innings en route to her first collegiate save.

Corban would begin the game's scoring in the bottom of the first inning, as DeHart registered a one-out infield single before Nippert belted her sixth home run of the season over the left centerfield fence for an early 2-0 Warrior lead. One batter later, Winckler ripped a run-scoring double to center field to bring home Castronovo following her single down the right field line to push Corban's lead to 3-0.

British Columbia would put its lone run on the board in the top of the fourth inning when Jesslyn Hodge led off the at-bat with a solo home run over the center field fence to pull the Thunderbirds with two runs (3-1).

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Corban would put another two runs on the board when DeHart led off with a single through the left side before stealing second and coming home on a triple to right field by Nippert. Castronovo would drive in the Warriors' final run of the afternoon via a groundout to short that brought home Nippert making the score 5-1 in favor of Corban.

Greenough went the opening 4.0 innings for Corban allowed one earned run on one hit with a team-high five strikeouts before Slate came in for the final nine outs, while allowing three hits to go along with a pair of K's.

Cassandra Dpyshey led UBC's offense with a two-hit performance, while Hodge and Molly Gosnell also registered hits for the Thunderbirds. Alana Westerhof would suffer theloss going the distance for British Columbia allowing five earned runs on nine hits with a game-high nine strikeouts.

Corban will continue play at the Northwest Cup hosted by Concordia-Portland against NCAA Division III member Whitworth this afternoon – Saturday, February 18th – at 3:00 p.m. at Hood View Park in Clackamas.
