Schriber Pitches Warriors to Win Over D-III Whitworth

BOX SCORE

CLACKAMAS, Ore. – Junior Chelsea Schriber helped lead Corban's No. 23-ranked softball team to a 12-4 victory over NCAA Division III member Whitworth, as she struck out five Pirates over five innings Saturday at Hood View Park.

With the win, Corban pushes its season-high winning streak to four games improving to 8-2 on the season. Meanwhile, Whitworth evens its 2012 record at 2-2.

Along with Schriber's pitching performance, juniors Brittany Chestnut and Stephanie Nippert collected three hits each to go along with a three-RBI showing by senior Emma Winckler. The senior duo of Winckler and Abbie Pynch both had two hits, while three other Warriors – junior Chynna Sandhop, junior Emma Fitzgerald, and junior Liane DeHart – had a hit each. Following Schriber's five-inning outing, freshman reliever Jessica Slate went the final two innings allowing one unearned run on four hits.

Corban would score three unanswered runs over the opening two innings thanks to a run-scoring single to left field by Nippert that scored Chestnut in the first inning. In the top of the second inning, Chestnut drove in a pair via a triple that brought home Pynch and Fitzgerald making the score 3-0 in favor of the Warriors.

Whitworth would get on the board in the bottom of the second inning when Julia Johnson belted a one-out solo home run over the left centerfield fence to pull the Pirates within two runs (3-1).

In the top of the third inning, Corban added another run on a RBI single to left field by Winckler that brought home Nippert following her leadoff single and stolen base to make the score 4-1 in favor of the Warriors.

Whitworth would pull back within two runs (4-2) in the bottom of the third inning when Jamie Brunner registered an infield run-scoring single that plated Sami Parr after her leadoff single to third base.

Corban would push its lead to four runs (6-2) in the top of the fifth inning when Winckler belted her fourth home run of the season over the center field fence that also brought home sophomore Courtney Castronovo following her one-out walk.

No wanting to allow the nationally-ranked Warriors to grab too much of a lead, Whitworth added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Sacha Clow singled up the middle to bring home Parr making the score 6-3 in favor of the designated visiting team.

In the top of the sixth inning, Corban put three more runs on the board thanks to back-to-back home runs by Sandhop and Nippert that pushed the Warriors' lead to six runs (9-3). Sandhop would crank a two-run home run over the left field fence that also scored DeHart before Nippert belted her team-leading seventh home run of the season over the center field fence to cap the inning's scoring.

Corban would put three more runs on the board in the top of the seventh inning, as the Warriors collected only one hit to go along with a pair of runs on a Whitworth error and a bases loaded walk to Castronovo that capped Corban's scoring for a nine-run advantage (12-3).

Whitworth would get one run back in the bottom of the seventh inning when Parr scored on an error by Corban's left fielder that concluded the game's scoring with Corban earning the 12-4 victory.

Parr and Brunner led the Pirates' offense with a pair of three-hit performances, as Parr went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs scored. In the circle for Whitworth, Riley Fritz would suffer the loss going the opening 5.1 innings allowing nine earned runs on 12 hits before turning the ball over to Taylor Gilbert for the final 1.2 innings of work.

Corban will continue play at the annual two-day Northwest Cup tomorrow – Sunday, February 19th – against the University of British Columbia beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Hood View Park in Clackamas.
