Offensive Onslaught Continues Against Bearcats

BOX SCORE

CLACKAMAS, Ore. – For the third game in a row, Corban's No. 23-ranked softball team scored 10-or-more runs thanks to a pair of home runs by sophomore Lounette Jackson and superb pitching by junior Chelsea Schriber in an 11-3 five-inning win over cross town rival Willamette Sunday to conclude play at the Northwest Cup at Hood View Park.

Junior Brittany Chestnut, sophomore Courtney Castronovo, and Jackson each collected two hits on the afternoon, while four other Warriors – senior Abbie Pynch, junior Chynna Sandhop, junior Stephanie Nippert, and junior Rachel Conard – all registered a hit for Corban that included a three-RBI showing by Nippert.

In the circle, Schriber went the opening 4.0 innings allowing three earned runs on four hits with a game-high three strikeouts before freshman reliever Jessica Slate came in for the final three outs.

Corban would open the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, as Castronovo singled to left field to drive in Chestnut following her leadoff single. The very next batter – senior Emma Winckler – brought home the Warriors' second run on a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Sandhop giving Corban a two-run lead (2-0) after its first at-bat.

In the bottom of the second inning, the designated home Warriors added four more runs when junior Erica Fitzgerald scored via an error by Willamette's centerfielder before Nippert blasted her team-leading ninth home run of the season over the left centerfield fence that also scored Chestnut and Pynch for an early 6-0 Warrior lead.

Jackson would lead off the bottom of the third inning with her second home run of the season that extended Corban's lead to seven runs (7-0).

Willamette would finally get on the board in the top of the fourth inning when Nichole Robertson belted a three-run home run over the right centerfield fence that scored Susie Krewer and Courtney Galli to pull the Bearcats within four runs (7-3).

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Jackson led off with her second home run of the game via a solo shot over the right centerfield fence to extend Corban's lead to five runs (8-3). After a pair of walks and a single by Pynch that loaded the bases, freshman pinch runner Shelby Mauermann came home on a pass ball that moved everyone up a base. The very next batter – Chestnut – would end the game with a two-run single up the middle that scored Pynch and junior Liane DeHart making the score 11-3 and ending the game due to the eight-run mercy rule after five innings.

Willamette would get hits from four different players, while Robertson drove in all three Bearcat runs via her fourth inning round tripper. In the circle, Hayley Glantz went the distance allowing 11 runs (six earned) on 10 hits to go along with a pair of strikeouts.

With the Cup-closing victory, Corban improves to 10-2 on the season and Willamette drops to 1-3. The Warriors will return to action in their home opener on Thursday, February 23rd, against the Bearcats in a single game that is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. on Warrior Field in Salem.
