BOX SCORES – GAME #1 | GAME #2
SALEM, Ore. – Corban's No. 17-ranked softball team dropped the final double header of the regular season to nationally-ranked Concordia, 12-4 in five inning & 5-4, Friday at Warrior Field on Senior Recognition Day.
With today's season-ending results, Corban closes out the regular season at 30-12 overall and 15-9 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Concordia improves to 24-18 overall and 15-7 in CCC games.
Despite Concordia having a make-up double header with the NAIA's No. 7-ranked Oregon Tech tomorrow in Portland, these same two teams will meet in the first game of next week's CCC Tournament on Friday, May 4th, at noon at OIT's Softball Complex in Klamath Falls. The Cavaliers will be the home team and No. 2-seed, while the Warriors will be the No. 3-seed for the first time in three seasons.
In the final home double header of their careers, seniors
Abbie Pynch and
Emma Winckler were a combined 3-for-8 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Pynch went 2-for-5 at the plate with a two-run home run, while Winckler was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
GAME #1 – CONCORDIA 12, CORBAN 4 (5 INNINGS)
In the opener, Concordia would strike first scoring a pair of runs in its opening at-bat thanks to a bases-loaded walk by Jordyn Brown and a RBI single to right field by Mary Lugar for a 2-0 Cavalier lead.
Corban would strike back in the bottom of the first inning when junior
Rachel Conard belted her eighth home run of the season over the center field fence to score fellow junior
Stephanie Nippert after she reached on a fielder's choice.
With the score tied at 2-all in the top of the second inning, Concordia exploded for seven runs on five hits with the highlight coming off the bat of Tobey Varney via a three-run home run over the left center field fence for a 5-2 Cavalier lead. Concordia would add four more runs on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch before a two-run error extended the inning allowing Jennifer Lutton to bring home a run on a RBI groundout that pushed the Cavaliers' lead to seven runs (9-2).
In the top of the fourth inning, Concordia would add two more runs on Lutton's first collegiate home run – a two-run shot over the left field fence – that extended the Cavaliers' lead to nine runs (11-2).
Corban would get those two runs back in the bottom of the fourth inning when Pynch belted her fourth home run of the season over the left field fence to bring home Winckler making the score 11-4 in favor of the visiting team.
Concordia added its 12th and final run of the game in the top of the fifth inning when Varney hit her second home run of the game via a solo blast to right center for an eight-run lead (12-4).
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Corban would put runners on second and third with one out but could not capitalize as Concordia's defense stepped up and held the conference's highest scoring team without a run ending the game via the eight-run mercy rule.
Corban was led offensively by junior
Brittany Chestnut with a 2-for-4 performance, while junior
Amy Greenough suffered her sixth loss of the season going one-plus innings allowing eight runs (five earned) on nine hits before freshman
Jessica Slate pitched the final 4.0 innings allowing four earned runs on three hits.
Concordia was led by Varney with a 3-for-4 showing that included a pair of home runs, two runs scored, and four RBI. In the circle, Brown went the distance allowing four earned runs on eight hits with a game-high five strikeouts.
GAME #2 – CONCORDIA 5, CORBAN 4
The finale would be a pitcher's duel until the bottom of the fifth inning when Corban erupted for three runs on three hits, as Chestnut drove in the game's opening run on an infield single that scored Winckler before junior
Chynna Sandhop ripped a two-run single to right field that scored Chestnut and DeHart for a three-run Warrior lead (3-0).
Unfortunately, Concordia's offense could not be held at bay thanks to a five-run top of the sixth inning when the Cavaliers got back-to-back home runs from Varney and Kyndell Andrews before Brown belted a three-run home run over the left field fence that scored Kate Santos and Laura Luther for a 5-3 CU lead.
Neither team would score again until the bottom of the seventh inning when Corban pulled within a single run (5-4) on a sacrifice fly by Nippert with runners on first and third. Conard would be intentionally walked to load the bases before a game-ending fly out to right field would give Concordia the hard-fought sweep.
Chestnut and Sandhop would lead Corban's offense with a pair of two-hit performances, while junior
Chelsea Schriber had a six-game winning streak snapped en route to falling to 11-4 on the season after allowing five earned runs on five hits before Greenough came in to get the final three outs.
Concordia would get a 2-for-3 showing from Brown offensively with three RBI, while she also went the distance in the circle for the second straight game en route to picking up her ninth win of the season despite allowing four runs (one earned) on nine hits.
