BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – For the first time in program history, Corban's men's soccer team wrapped up its regular season home schedule unbeaten thanks to a victory over Oregon Tech, 1-0, Saturday afternoon on Warrior Field.
"I felt good about our team's performance today," said head coach
Aaron Lewis. "Our timing and movement off the ball was very good and although we'd like to see more balls in the back of the net, we were dangerous most of the match. It's an exciting time for us, as we feel like we have put some things together over the last couple weeks that have put us back in a nice rhythm. We are collectively embracing the challenges we have heading into the post season."
Corban (13-1-2, 9-1-2 CCC) closed out its regular season home schedule with an unbeaten 8-0-1 record, as the Warriors surpassed the old mark set during the 2003 season when then-Western Baptist was 6-1-0 on its own turf. The Warriors also moved within one win of capturing its first Cascade Collegiate Conference regular season title since 1997 when Coach Lewis was a student-athlete. Meanwhile, Oregon Tech (5-12-0, 4-9-0 CCC) has been eliminated from the playoffs after the Hustlin' Owls dropped their sixth straight game.
A scoreless first half that was dominated offensively by Corban saw the Warriors collect 14 unanswered shots over the opening 35 minutes before Oregon Tech put one toward the goal. Despite the 14-to-3 advantage in total shots that included a 5-0 shots on goal difference by Corban, neither team could find the back of the net as the opening half resulted in a scoreless tie.
Just over a minute into the second half, Corban would finally get on the board thanks to junior
Arsinio Walker's fourth goal of the season via a header off a free kick by freshman
Tim Kagey in the 47th minute. After a foul by Oregon Tech along the far sideline that resulted in the game's first of three yellow cards, Kagey lofted a free kick into the box that Walker headed over the outstretched arm of Oregon's Tech goalkeeper for the eventual game-winner, which was his second in two days, at the 46:07 mark.
Corban would continue to dominate the offensive flow for the remainder of the game, as the Warriors collected eight more shots (10-to-2) than Oregon Tech in the second half.
Freshman goalkeeper
Jordan Farr needed to make only two saves in order to pick up his team and conference-leading 10th shutout of the season, as the first-year Warrior became the first player in program history to register a double-digit total in that category and dropped his Goals Against Average (GAA) to a conference-low 0.49 in the process. Farr is the third NAIA player this season to register 10-or-more shutouts joining Josh Oldroyd of Bryan (Tenn.) with 10.17 and Chris Eriksson of MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) with an identical 10.00.
At the other end of the field, Oregon Tech's Loren Jessen tallied a game-high seven saves with the Owls' defense also keeping the Warriors from scoring in the first half following a save by a defender in the ninth minute.
Overall, Corban registered 19 more shots (24-to-5) than Oregon Tech with the Warriors putting six more shots on target thanks to an 8-to-2 difference. The two teams combined for 36 fouls, as Corban earned the game's only corner kicks with a 9-to-0 advantage.
Before the game even started, a highlight happened when senior
Steffan Bard was honored in a pregame ceremony thanking him for his service to the program over the past four years, as the four-year Warrior has been a big part of the turnaround by Corban since he arrived on-campus in 2010.
Corban will close out the regular season on Saturday, November 9th, against conference-leading Northwest beginning at 11:00 a.m. in Kirkland. The winner of that game will be the regular season conference champions and host throughout the Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament.
