Corban and Willamette competed in a dual track & field meet Thursday, as the host Bearcats defeated Corban in both meets by a combined 36 points.

Warriors Fall to Cross Town Rival Willamette in Dual Meet

FINAL RESULTS

SALEM, Ore. – Corban's men's and women's track & field teams fell to cross town rival and NCAA Division III member Willamette in a dual meet held Thursday at McCullough Stadium.

On the men's side, Willamette earned a commanding 22-point win (74-52) with the Bearcats earning a 14-point victory (71-57) on the women's side.

WOMEN'S RESULTS

After the opening event, the women's 200 meter dash, Corban held an 8-1 lead after junior Hannah Whitehead won the event in a time of 26.21 seconds to earn five points followed by senior Eliya Kohl's second place finish thanks to a time of 26.73 seconds that earned the Warriors another three points. Five other Corban runners – freshman Cecilie Russell, sophomore Haley Holboke, freshman Chelsea Reifschneider, senior Christy Mosier, and senior Jenny Harman – also took part in the event with each Warrior breaking the 31-second mark.

Next up would be the women's 400 meter run, as three Warriors – sophomore Emily Childers, Russell, and Holboke – swept the podium placing 1-2-3 to earn a combined nine points to push Corban's lead to 17-1. Childers would win the event in a time of 1:02.05, while Russell (1:02.27) and Holboke (1:03.67) rounded out the Warrior finishers.

Corban would continue to increase its lead thanks to a win by senior Rachael Estabrook in the 1,500 meter run that pushed the visiting team's lead to 21 points (22-1).

Following Willamette earning 18 unanswered points in the 10,000 meter run and the 100 meter hurdles – that made the score 22-19 in favor of the Warriors. Corban would enter junior Rebecca Cox, Harman, and Mosier in the 100 meter hurdles, as the trio finished fifth, sixth, and seventh, respectively, led by Cox's time of 17.69 seconds.

Willamette would earn five points in the next event, the women's 400 meter hurdles, with the win. Freshman Alexis Mitzel and senior Mesha Perkins earned a combined four points for Corban, as the Warriors pushed their lead to two points (26-24) thanks to a second and third place finish, respectively. Mitzel posted a time of 1:12.58, while Perkins turned in a time of 1:22.04.

The host Bearcats would increase their lead following a 1-2-3 finish in the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase, as Willamette earned a seven-point lead (33-26). Sophomore McKenzie Poe and freshman Erica Nizer would post fourth and fifth place finishes, respectively, thanks to times of 12:45.88 and 13:19.00.

In the women's 4x400 meter relay, Corban earned five points to pull within two points (33-31), as the Warriors' 'A' team took home the victory thanks to a time of 4:07.75. Corban would enter two other teams in the relay, as the 'B' and 'C' teams posted times of 4:15.70 and 4:59.83 to finish second and fourth, respectively.

The women's 4x800 meter relay team would earn Corban another five points, as the Warriors took the lead in the meet at 36-33 through nine events. The 'A' team posted a time of 10:01.32 to defeat Corban's 'B' squad following a time of 10:10.58.

Corban would earn a combined six points in the women's high jump to put the visiting Warriors in front by six points (42-36), as freshman Sarah Taylor won the event after clearing the bar at 1.60 meters (5-feet, 3-inches) and fellow freshman Carley Deyoe posted a third-place finish thanks to a mark of 1.50 meters (4-feet, 11-inches). Harman and Cox would also compete for the Warriors, as the duo finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

The women's pole vault would only have one person take part, as Willamette won the event and pulled within one point at 42-41.

In the women's triple jump, Willamette earned a first and third place finish en route to gaining six more points, as the Bearcats pushed their lead to 47-45. Kohl would compete for Corban earning a second place finish that was good enough for three points thanks to a leap of 10.72 meters (35-feet, 2-inches).

Mosier would win the women's shot put en route to earning five points for Corban versus Willamette's second and third place finish that earned the Bearcats a combined four points and pushed the home team's lead to one point (51-50). Mosier's mark of 12.31 meters (40-feet, 4.75-inches) would win the event by over five feet, as Cox also competed in the event finishing sixth overall after clearing the 27-foot mark.

In the discus, Corban would earn three points thanks to a runner-up finish by Mosier with Willamette earning a combined six points thanks to first and third place finishes. After 14 events, Willamette held a 57-53 lead. Mosier's mark of 36.15 meters (118-feet, 7.50-inches) would lead the Warriors' competitors that included freshman Kelsey Wright, who finished sixth overall after posting a throw of 26.06 meters (85-feet, 6.25-inches).

Willamette would earn five more points in the javelin with Corban earning a combined four points thanks a second place finish by Wright and Harman's third place showing. The host Bearcats increased their lead to 62-57 after Wright posted a runner-up mark of 33.98 meters (111-feet, 6-inches) and Harman's third place mark was 33.37 meters (109-feet, 6-inches).

In the final event, the hammer throw, Willamette would sweep the podium en route to earning a 1-2-3-4 finish and picking up the victory by the final score of 71-57. A fifth place showing by Wright would highlight Corban's performance in the final event thanks to a mark of 25.45 meters (83-feet, 6.25-inches).

MEN'S RESULTS

The men's meet would open with the 200 meter dash, as Willamette took the lead posting a 1-2-3 finish to earn nine points en route to grabbing 9-0 lead. Sophomore Brett Johnson, freshman Seth West, and junior Kyle Croft would compete for Corban, as Johnson posted a fifth place finish in a time of 23.36 seconds.

After going without a point in two events – the 800 and 10,000 meter runs – with no runners competing that pushed Willamette's lead to 27 points, Corban would earn six points versus Willamette's three in the 110 meter hurdles. The Warriors scored their first points of the meet making the difference 24 points (30-6) thanks to a first place finish by Croft and a third place showing by senior Taylor Wilkins in times of 16.30 and 19.64, respectively. Freshman Mark Schearer would also take part in the event finishing fourth overall thanks to a time of 20.11 seconds.

In the 400 meter hurdles, Willamette continued to add to its lead thanks to a 1-2 place finish that was good enough for eight points as the Bearcats increased their lead to 38-7 following a third place finish by Corban junior Chris McGehee thanks to a time of 1:06.57 that earned the Warriors a single point.

The 3,000 meter steeplechase would see Willamette increase its lead by sweeping the podium with a 1-2-3 finish as the Bearcats pushed ahead by the score of 47-7 after six events.

In the 4x400 meter relay, Corban earned five points thanks to a victory that pulled the Warriors within the score of 47-12 after the Warriors' 'A' team posted a winning time of 3:33.82 following by Corban's 'B' squad finishing third thanks to a time of 3:52.55.

Corban would then sweep the podium in the 4x800 meter relay and earned five points for the victory, as the Warriors crawled closer to the lead (47-17). The 'A' team would win the race thanks to a time of 8:17.63, as the 'B' and 'C' squads were clocked at 8:45.15 and 8:56.24, respectively.

In the high jump, Corban would post a 1-2-3 finish en route to earning nine points and pulling within 19 points (47-26). Freshman Caleb Wilkins would win the event clearing the bar at 1.82 meters (5-feet, 11.50-inches) followed by Schearer and the elder Wilkins, Taylor, as both Warriors cleared the 5-foot, 7.75-inch mark.

Junior Jordan Hatfield would win the pole vault en route to earning five points for the Warriors, as Corban pulled within the score of 50-31 after Willamette earned three more points via a runner-up showing. Hatfield would clear the bar at 3.50 meters (11-feet, 5.75-inches) to win the event by six inches.

The shot put would help Willamette build its lead following a 1-2 finish that earned the Bearcats a combined eight points and pushed the home team's lead to 26 points (58-32). Senior Jason Mentzer would post a third place finish for Corban to earn one point, as Mentzer posted a mark of 12.66 meters (41-feet, 6.50-inches). Four other Warriors – freshman Dane Walker, sophomore Jack Lander, freshman Jordan Rifenberg, and Schearer – also competed for Corban, as the quartet all cleared the 28-foot mark.

Corban earn a combined six points in the discus thanks to a first place finish by Walker and a third place showing by Lander. The Warriors would pull within 23 points (61-38) after Walker won the event thanks to a mark of 42.07 meters (138-feet, 0.50-inches) followed by Lander's mark of 36.66 meters (120-feet, 3.50-inches). Also competing for the Warriors was Mentzer, Hatfield, and Rifenberg with all three clearing the 73-foot mark.

The javelin event would see Corban earn four more points thanks to a runner-up finish by Hatfield and a third place showing by senior Bryce Petersen. Willamette would continue to hold the lead after the Bearcats won the event and increased their lead to 66-42 after 13 events. Hatfield would post a mark of 49.12 meters (161-feet, 2.25-inches), while Petersen hit a career-best distance of 45.41 meters (149-feet).

Corban would sweep the podium in the 100 meter dash en route to earning nine points to pull within 15 points (66-51). Johnson, Schearer, and the elder Wilkins would all finish under the 12-second mark, as Johnson won the race thanks to a time of 11.36 seconds.

In the final event, the hammer throw, Willamette would place first and second, respectively, en route to earning the 22-point victory (74-52). Walker would earn a single point for Corban thanks to a third place finish after posting a mark of 43.87 meters (143-feet, 11.50-inches), while the trio of Lander, Mentzer, and Rifenberg would also compete in the event with all three Warriors clearing the 90-foot mark.

Corban will return to action next weekend beginning on Friday, March 22nd, at the Willamette Heptathlon & Decathlon Invite starting at 2:00 p.m. at McCullough Stadium in Salem.
