DELTA, B.C. – The NAIA's No. 10-ranked Corban softball team closed out its four-game road trip in Canada with a double header split against the Thunderbirds of British Columbia with an 11-4 win in Game #1 before suffering a 3-0 loss in Game #2 Friday at North Delta Park.
Corban (27-7) was led offensively by juniors
Courtney Castronovo and
Lounette Jackson with three hits each, while Castronovo belted her 10th home run of the season in the Warriors' opening victory. Three other Warrior seniors –
Brittany Chestnut,
Erica Fitzgerald, and
Stephanie Nippert – all tallied a pair of hits for the Warriors, while Nippert and Jackson drove in three runs each.
In the opener, senior
Amy Greenough went the distance allowing four earned runs on seven hits with a game-high six strikeouts en route to picking up her eighth win of the season. Senior
Chelsea Schriber would pitch all 6.0 innings in the finale allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with a game-high tying three K's.
British Columbia (23-18) was led offensively by Alana Westerhof with three hits, while Carlyn Shimizu tallied two hits on the afternoon. UBC's Nicole Day would get the start in the opener allowing five earned runs on six hits in 4.0 innings of work before turning the ball over to Jamie Randall for the final 3.0 innings, as she allowed six runs (four earned) on six hits. The finale would see Westerhof go the distance for the host Thunderbirds, as she allowed just three hits to go along with a game-high tying three strikeouts.
GAME #1 — CORBAN 11, BRITISH COLUMBIA 4
In Friday's opener, neither team would muster a lot of offense in the opening inning before Corban plated a single run in the top of the second inning on a single to left field by Jackson that scored Fitzgerald following her leadoff single giving the visiting Warriors' an early 1-0 lead.
British Columbia would battle back to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning, as the T-Birds got a run-scoring single to center field by Molly Gosnell that scored Westerhof after she led off the at-bat with a single to left center.
One inning later, UBC would take the lead (3-1) on a two-run home run by Cassandra Dypchey that cleared the center field fence also scoring Shimizu after she registered an infield single to leadoff the inning.
In the top of the fourth inning, Corban would erupt for four runs on four hits that included a RBI single to left field by Chestnut with the bases loaded before Nippert ripped a three-run triple to right field that handed the Warriors a two-run lead (5-3).
One inning later, Castronovo would give Corban a three-run advantage (6-3) thanks to her 10th home run of the season that cleared the left center field fence.
In the top of the sixth inning, Corban would add to its lead securing a seven-run lead (10-3) thanks to a RBI single to center field by senior
Chynna Sandhop and a run-scoring single to left field by Fitzgerald two batters later. The visiting Warriors would close the scoring in their half of the sixth inning thanks to a two-run single to center field by Jackson that scored Nippert and Fitzgerald.
Corban would cap its scoring in Game #1 in the top of the seventh inning pushing its lead to eight runs (11-3), as Nippert reached on an error by UBC's left fielder that allowed Chestnut to score from second after she registered a one-out single one batter earlier.
British Columbia would score its final run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Lindsay McElroy grounded out to second with runners on second and third allowing Jenna Neufield to come home for the final tally of 11-4 in favor of the visiting Warriors.
Jackson would lead Corban's offense with a 3-for-4 performance, while four other Warriors – Castronovo, Chestnut, Fitzgerald, and Nippert – registering two hits each in the win.
British Columbia was led offensively by Westerhof with two hits, while five other Thunderbirds – Shimizu, Neufield, Dypchey, Gosnell, and Yasmin Bains – tallied hits for the home team.
GAME #2 — BRITISH COLUMBIA 3, CORBAN 0
In the finale of this week's four-game series between Corban and British Columbia, both teams would be locked in a pitcher's dual until the bottom of the second inning when UBC scored the eventual game-winning run grabbing a 1-0 lead on a single to center field by Tayla Westgard that scored McElroy after she reached base safely on an error by the Warriors to leadoff the inning.
British Columbia would add to its lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when pinch-hitter Dhaliwal ripped a two-run single that scored Westgard and Randall, as the host Thunderbirds grabbed a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the seventh inning, Corban would have its best scoring opportunity when the Warriors put runners at first and third with two outs only to have UBC's pitcher get the final batter to foul out to end the game and preserve the shutout for the Thunderbirds.
Senior
Rachel Conard, Castronovo, and sophomore
Kyrianna Sorensen would be the only Warriors to register a hit against UBC's pitching in Game #2.
Five different British Columbia players – Shimizu, Neufeld, Dhaliwal, Westerhof, and Westgard – tallied hits, as Dhaliwal drove in a game-high two runs for the T-Birds.
Corban will close out its Spring Break road trip tomorrow – Saturday, March 30th – with an early-afternoon double header against NCAA Division II member Saint Martin's beginning at 12:00 p.m. in Lacey, Washington.
