LACEY, Wash. – Senior
Stephanie Nippert became the first player in Cascade Collegiate Conference history to hit 19-or-more home runs in three straight seasons with a pair of long balls Saturday in Corban's double header split with NCAA Division II member Saint Martin's, 2-5 & 11-1, on SMU Softball Field.
Corban (28-8) was led offensively by sophomore
Kyrianna Sorensen with a combined four hits, while Nippert and fellow senior
Liane DeHart tallied three hits each in Saturday's double header. Nippert would register half of Corban's four home runs on the afternoon, while scoring three runs and driving in a team-high four RBI.
Sophomore
Jessica Slate would go the distance in the opener allowing five earned runs on nine hits with a pair of strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work en route to suffering her first loss of the season. In the finale, senior
Chelsea Schriber would allow one unearned run on three hits in 5.0 innings of work en route to picking up her team-leading 11th win of the year before freshman
Samantha Gutwig would get the final three out for the Warriors.
Saint Martin's was led offensively by Lacey McGladrey and Joslyn Engenio with three hits each in the double header, while Sam Munger went the distance in the opener allowing two earned runs on five hits to pick up her 10th win of the season. In Game #2, Taylor Bakos went the opening 4.0 innings allowing seven runs (four earned) on eight hits before Engenio and Kaylee Lawson combined to allow four earned runs on four hits in 2.0 innings of work.
GAME #1 — SAINT MARTIN'S 5, CORBAN 2
In Saturday's opener, Saint Martin's would grab the lead in the bottom of the first inning (1-0) when Eugenio registered a run-scoring infield single that scored McGladrey after she led off the at-bat with a single through the left side.
Corban would tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the third inning when senior
Rachel Conard drew a bases loaded walk that brought home Sorensen after she registered a one-out infield single three batters earlier.
Saint Martin's would take the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth inning when Munger ripped a two-run single up the middle that scored Megan Miller and McGladrey before Eugenio reached on a fielder's choice that drove in Madi Davis to give the host Saints a three-run lead (4-1).
In the top of the sixth inning, Nippert would leadoff with her 19th home run of the season via a solo blast over the left field fence that pulled Corban within two runs (4-2).
Unfortunately that would be as close as the visiting Warriors would get, as Saint Martin's scored a single run in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to a Iman Gary single up the middle that scored Taviah Jenkins to increase SMU's lead to a game-ending three runs (5-2).
Sorensen would lead Corban's offense with a 2-for-3 performance, while three other Warriors – senior
Brittany Chestnut, DeHart, and Nippert – also tallied hits.
Saint Martin's was led offensively by McGladrey and Eugenio with two hits each, while five other Saints also tallied hits.
GAME #2 — CORBAN 11, SAINT MARTIN'S 1 (6 INNINGS)
The final game of Corban's eight-game Spring Break road trip would begin as a pitcher's dual until the third inning when sophomore
Shelby Mauermann led off with a solo home run over the right field fence to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third inning, Saint Martin's would score its lone run of the game when Miller came home on a throwing error by Corban to tie the game at 1-1.
Corban would retake the lead in the top of the fourth inning thanks to a bases-clearing three-run double to right field by Sorensen that scored senior
Erica Fitzgerald, junior
Courtney Castronovo, and Mauermann, as the visiting Warriors grabbed a three-run lead (4-1).
In the top of the fifth inning, Corban added to its lead thanks to a RBI single to center field by Conard before junior
Lounette Jackson belted a three-run home run over the center field fence two batters later to give the Warriors a seven-run lead (8-1).
Corban would close out the game's scoring in the top of the sixth inning when Nippert crushed her second home run of the afternoon and 20th of the season over the center field fence, as the Warriors pushed their lead to a game-ending 10 runs (11-1).
Conard, DeHart, Nippert, and Sorensen all tallied two hits each for Corban, while four other Warriors – Chestnut, Castronovo, Jackson, and Mauermann – registered a hit each.
Saint Martin's would get hits from four different players, as Miller scored the host Saints sixth and final run of the afternoon.
Corban will return to action on Friday, April 5th, against Cascade Collegiate Conference member Concordia in an afternoon double header beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Warrior Field in Salem.
