BOX SCORE 2
CALDWELL, Idaho – For only the second time in program history, Corban's softball team reached the 30-win mark thanks to a split with The College of Idaho, 0-18 & 9-2, Saturday at Symms Field.
With today's results coupled with a sweep by Concordia over No. 11-ranked Oregon Tech, Corban (30-10, 15-3 CCC) holds a one-game lead in the current Cascade Collegiate Conference standings over the Cavaliers with 10 games left in the regular season.
Offensively, Corban was led by senior
Chynna Sandhop with a combined three-hit performance on the afternoon to go along with a pair of hits each by three other Warriors – senior
Brittany Chestnut, junior
Courtney Castronovo, and sophomore
Kyrianna Sorensen. Despite only collecting one hit on the afternoon, senior
Stephanie Nippert made the most of it by belting her 22nd home run of the season and the 75th of her career as she pulled within a single home run of tying the NAIA's all-time career mark.
Sophomore
Jessica Slate would get the start in Game #1 for Corban allowing four earned runs on five hits in just 1.0 innings of work before turning the ball over to a pair of relievers – senior
Amy Greenough and freshman
Samantha Gutwig. Greenough and Gutwig would combine to allow 14 runs (11 earned) on 12 hits, as Slate suffered only her second loss this season. The finale was a different story pitching-wise for Corban, as senior
Chelsea Schriber went the distance allowing two earned runs on seven hits en route to picking up her team-leading 13th win this year.
The College of Idaho (25-21, 11-11 CCC) registered a combined 24 hits on the afternoon that included a single-game school-record 17 in the opener. Katie Rowe was the highlight for the Coyotes, as she was 3-for-4 in Game #1 with a career-high six RBIs, while Julie Henrie turned in a 3-for-4 showing in the night cap and drove in one of C of I's two runs.
After pitching the seventh no-hitter of her career yesterday against Northwest Christian, Nikayla Skinner got the start in Game #1 for C of I allowing just two hits in a complete game performance that included a game-high six strikeouts. In the finale, Cortni Pena got the start for the Coyotes allowing five earned runs on six hits in 2.1 innings of work before Skinner pitched the final 4.2 innings allowing four earned runs on five hits with six more K's.
GAME #1 — COLLEGE OF IDAHO 18, CORBAN 0 (5 INNINGS)
Saturday's opener would belong to The College of Idaho from the beginning, as the host Coyotes scored at least three runs in each of its four at-bats that included a nine-run outburst in the bottom of the fourth inning.
C of I's Ashley Van Horne would begin the scoring with a two-run single to left field in the bottom of the first inning that would turn out to be the game-winning runs, as the host Coyotes built an early 3-0 lead after their opening at-bat.
Corban would break up Skinner's bid for her second straight no-hitter in the top of the third inning when Castronovo singled through the left side, but did not advance any further.
The College of Idaho took advantage of three home runs on the afternoon that included a grand slam by Rowe in the bottom of the fourth inning that capped the scoring for the game.
Corban's only scoring threat would come in the top of the fifth inning when Nippert reached on an error by C of I before she advanced to third on a one-out double by Sandhop. Unfortunately for the visiting Warriors, The College of Idaho was up to the challenge defensively holding Corban at-bay despite loading the bases with two outs. Skinner would strike out the final two Warrior hitters en route to preserving the lop-sided victory for the host Coyotes.
Sandhop and Castronovo were the only offense for Corban, as the duo each collected a hit.
The College of Idaho would get three-hit performances from Rachael Strong, Rowe, and McKensie Stanton, while Strong also drove in four RBIs for the Coyotes.
GAME #2 — CORBAN 9, COLLEGE OF IDAHO 2
Corban's weekend finale was completely different for the Warriors, as they jumped out to a three-run lead (4-1) after the first inning and never relinquished it en route to collecting the victory.
In the top of the first inning, senior
Rachel Conard and junior
Lounette Jackson would draw back-to-back walks with the bases loaded before senior
Erica Fitzgerald roped a two-run single to right center that scored Castronovo and Conard for a 4-0 lead.
The College of Idaho would put a run on the board in the bottom of the first inning, but Corban answered back with five unanswered runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings en route to grabbing a 9-1 lead.
In the top of the third inning, Jackson belted a one-out solo home run over the left center field fence for her third long ball of the season as Corban jumped out to a four-run lead (5-1).
One inning later, Sandhop and sophomore pinch-runner
Shelby Mauermann perfectly executed a double steal with Mauermann taking second and Sandhop scoring from third for a 6-1 advantage.
In the top of the fifth inning, Nippert would put the icing on the cake with her lone hit of the afternoon via a three-run home run over the center field fence that also scored Sorensen and senior
Liane DeHart for an eight-run lead (9-1) by the visiting Warriors.
The College of Idaho would add one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Alexis Macias singled through the left side with two outs bringing home Henrie for the final tally of 9-2 in favor of the visiting Warriors.
Sandhop, Chestnut, and Sorensen would lead Corban's offensive attack with two hits each, while Nippert drove in a game-high three runs to go along with a pair of two-RBI performances by Jackson and Fitzgerald.
C of I was led offensively by Henrie with her three-hit showing, while four other Coyotes – Van Horne, Rowe, Macias, and Stanton – also collected hits for the home team.
Corban will return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 16th, against CCC rival Northwest Christian in an afternoon double header beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Warrior Field in Salem.
