Warriors Open CCC Slate With Shutout Over Hustlin' Owls

BOX SCORE

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Four second half goals helped Corban's men's soccer team open its Cascade Collegiate Conference schedule with a shutout win over Oregon Tech, 4-0, Tuesday at Trevor Derrah Field.

For the first time since 1990, Corban (4-0-0, 1-0-0 CCC) begins the season unbeaten in its first four games and posts its best four-game record since 2005 when the Warriors opened the year at 3-1-0. This is also the first time since 2010 that Corban won its opening CCC game. On the other hand, Oregon Tech (1-4-0, 0-1-0 CCC) stretches its streak to five straight years in which the Owls have dropped their opening conference game of the season.

"It was a good game tonight," said head coach Aaron Lewis. "The conditions made it really hard in the first half, as the winds was blowing pretty hard in one direction. It created a lot of opportunities and allowed OIT to counter."

Playing in cold conditions with winds that reached gusts of 20 miles per hour at different points throughout the game, four different Warriors tallied goals with freshman Kemar Prince registering a goal and an assist in the win.

Fellow freshman Bobby Hutchins scored the eventual game-winning goal early in the second half, while Prince, freshman Tim Kagey, and junior Eliseo Santana added three more unassisted goals in the game's final 45 minutes.

"We did not make many changes going into the second half, which allowed us to make some substitutions near the end," stated Lewis. "Our defense pinned Oregon Tech in during the second half and allowed us to capitalize on some offense chances."

In a scoreless first half that saw a combined total of seven shots (five for Corban and two for Oregon Tech), neither team found the back of the net with the host Owls having the best opportunity in the 35th minute. OIT's Luis Valdez would rocket a shot towards the net at the 34:30 mark that eluded Corban's goalkeeper only to be saved by a Warrior defender and cleared over the end line.

Hutchins would net his second goal of the season at the 47:27 mark on an assist by Prince. The scoring play would begin with Prince finding Hutchins inside the box where he pocketed a one-touch shot into the top right corner from a few yards out for a 1-0 lead.

Almost 20 minutes later, Corban was awarded a penalty kick in the 68th minute that Prince put into the back of the net for a two-goal lead (2-0). Prince's goal was his third of the season.

Less than 10 minutes later, Kagey would net his first collegiate goal off a free kick from midfield at the 73:15 mark to extend Corban's lead to three goals.

Corban would continue to hold its three-goal advantage until the final seconds when Santana scored his first goal as a Warrior with one second left on the clock for the final difference of four goals (4-0).

Freshman Jordan Farr played the entire game between the pipes for Corban and did not need to make a save en route to registering the first shutout of his young collegiate career. Meanwhile, Oregon Tech's Loren Jessen tallied a game-high six saves despite allowing all four goals for the Owls.

Overall, Corban registered 25 more shots (28-to-3) than Oregon Tech that included a 23-to-1 advantage in the second half. The Warriors would put 12 shots on-target versus the Owls' one.

"It was a good team effort and I thought it was a real reflection of our depth," commented Lewis. "We were able to keep pressure on Oregon Tech throughout the game and played a high quality contest overall."

Corban will return to the pitch on Saturday, September 21st, against the Knights of Warner Pacific beginning at 6:30 p.m. at David Douglas High School in Portland.
