BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – In a torrential downpour for over two hours, Corban's men's soccer team played to a scoreless tie in double overtime with the Geoducks of The Evergreen State College Saturday at Sparks Field on the campus of Willamette University.
With today's result, Corban moves to 6-0-1 overall and 3-0-1 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. On the other hand, Evergreen moves to 4-2-2 overall and 2-1-1 in league games.
"It was a good game, as weather obviously played a big part and that is why we moved over to Willamette," said head coach
Aaron Lewis. "I thought that our team played spirited soccer and worked really hard, as did Evergreen, but I think it was a fair result."
Today's results also allowed the Warriors to post the best start in school history through the opening seven games, as the old record was held by then-Western Baptist's 1990 squad that also began their season undefeated through six games before falling in their seventh contest.
"It's a real tribute to the guys, as they are playing together and buying into the system," said Lewis about the winning streak. "Prior to the game, we spoke about what has created that letting the guys know that it is not just a goalkeeper thing or a backline thing, it has really been the pressure that everyone has applied to the opposing defense. The streak has been fanatastic, but it speaks a lot to the guys as they were disappointed today even though they kept a clean sheet and did not win today. The expectations have been risen about the program and every time that they step onto the field, they expect to win."
At the opening whistle, the skies opened up and poured down upon the players and added gusts of winds throughout the game that both teams had an opportunity to take advantage of. Unfortunately, neither team could crack the other's defense resulting in the scoreless result.
"We wanted to take advantage of the wind, as we were pinning them in a little bit there for a while," commented Lewis about the conditions. "It allowed us to press our back line up and take advantage of the difficulty of hitting the ball over the top. I felt like we created a lot of opportunities, as we got 21 shots total today and 10 on frame, but just weren't able to put one home and that happens. I think that Evergreen is very organized defensively, as their goalkeeper played a very good game today helping them keep a clean sheet."
Throughout the entire game, Corban controlled the tempo with the Warriors collecting 13 more shots (21-to-8) than Evergreen that included an 11-to-1 difference in the second half with Corban battling the wind throughout the 45 minutes of play. The host Warriors also tallied six more corner kicks (9-to-3) that included six unanswered in the first half.
"It was a good game," said freshman goalkeeper
Jordan Farr, who pushed his scoreless streak to 380 minutes. "Disappointing that we could not continue the win streak, but it's tough to get any result with the weather that we were having. When we had the advantage, we felt like we could do anything that we wanted as balls were going way further than they should have. We weren't pressed at all when we had the wind and second half was so difficult to play against the wind. We maintained possession with the wind coming towards us a lot better than they dealt with it, as we were able to create more chances."
The Warriors' best scoring chances came in the second half when juniors
Arsinio Walker and
Josh Hamilton headed a pair of shots on-target that were both saved by Evergreen's goalkeeper Mauricio Sanchez. For the game, Sanchez registered a game-high 10 saves versus Farr's two with both keepers picking up a shutout.
"He does not get a lot of saves mainly because he is so good at reading balls in the air and he comes out and eats the balls that are played over the top," said Lewis about Farr's play. "He plays a huge part in our defense and starts out attack a lot of times by driving the ball. Today in the second half when we were going into the wind, he played some nice balls up top that allowed us to start our attack."
Corban will put its unbeaten streak on the line on Tuesday, October 1st, against The College of Idaho beginning at 4:00 p.m. (Mountain Standard Time) in Caldwell, Idaho.
"Both games will be tough this week, as the trip over to C of I will be a challenging one because they are a good side and I think that they are better than their record indicates. All their games have been closed including against ranked opponents," said Lewis about Corban's upcoming week. "Concordia has been the team to beat for the last several years and it will show us what we are made of."
