BOX SCORE 2 REDDING, Calif. – Corban scored one run on a wild pitch and
Kylie Durre plated the second with a single in a two-run eighth inning as the Warriors defeated William Jessup, 9-7, in the first of two non-conference softball games played here Friday morning. Simpson defeated Corban, 6-2, in the second game of the day.
With the split, Corban is now 3-1 this season.
Corban 9, William Jessup 7
The Warriors collected 14 hits, including three apiece from
Breonna Bejaran and Durre, but needed an extra inning to win its third straight game to start the season.
Corban tallied three runs in the opening inning on two hits, a walk, a hit batter and two wild pitches. Bajaran drove in her 13th run of the young season with a single in the frame.
William Jessup scored a run in the first and three in the second to take a 4-3 advantage, only to see Corban tie the score with a run in the third inning when
Raeann Dorcas drew a bases-loaded walk following singles by
Courtney Castronovo,
Lounette Jackson and Durre.
William Jessup, the home team in the neutral site game, scored single runs in the third and fifth innings to take a 6-4 lead, but Corban plated three in the sixth to regain the advantage at 7-6. Bejaran led off with a single and she moved to third on a double by Castronovo, and both scored on a double to deep right-center field by
Kyrianna Sorensen. Dorcas drove in Sorensen with a single through the right side of the infield.
The California team tied the game in the bottom of the seventh without benefit of a hit, and it left the winning run on third base when Corban pitcher
Jessica Holsinger coaxed an inning-ending pop up.
Using the international tie-breaker run, which starts the inning with a runner on second base, the Warriors scored twice. With Bejaran at second, Jackson collected a single, and pinch runner
McCayla Hoffman stole second. Bejaran came in on a wild pitch, and Durre's two-out infield single scored Hoffman. Holsinger retired William Jessup without a hit in the bottom of the eighth to improve her season record to 3-0.
Besides Bajaran and Durre with three hits apiece, Castronovo and Jackson also had a pair of hits. Holsinger, who came on in relief in the seventh, allowed an unearned run on no hits to pick up the pitching win.
Simpson 6, Corban 2
The host Red Hawks took a 3-0 lead after one inning in handing Corban its first loss of the season.
The Warriors scored their two runs with a two-out rally in the top of the fourth. Hoffman drew a walk and scored on a double by
Taylor Eilders, and she came home on a single by
Annie Owen.
Corban managed six hits by six different batters but left eight runners on base.
Samantha Gutwig took the loss in the circle, allowing all six runs on 10 hits.
"I was pleased with the way the girls competed today. The game against William Jessup was a hard fought game that put our team in pressure situations, and scenarios where they had to go out and execute our game plan. I was very pleased with how they responded," head coach
Nathan Ohta said. "Game two we competed well against a very good Simpson pitcher but just couldn't quite overcome a couple of early mistakes defensively. All in all this was a very positive day that will help our young team mature and gain the experience they need to be successful as we head into Cascade Conference play."
Corban returns to action on Saturday when it plays the same two teams.
