SOUTHERN OREGON 7, CORBAN 4 (
Box Score)
The visiting Warriors scored a run in the top of the second on a solo homer to right field by
Courtney Castronovo, but Southern Oregon responded with four in the bottom of the inning to take a lead it would not give up. A Corban error led to three of the runs being unearned.
Annie Owens used her speed to create a Corban run in the third, reaching on a bunt single, advancing on a ground ball, stealing third and then scoring on a ground out by
Taylor Eilders.
Another Corban error allowed the Raiders to make it 5-2 in the bottom of the third, but the Warriors had a ready response in the fourth when three singles led to their third run of the game.
Breonna Bejaran and
Lounette Jackson hit singles and Castronovo drove in pinch runner
Shelby Mauermann with a base hit.
Nursing a 5-3 lead, Southern Oregon doubled its advantage by scoring two runs on just one hit in the fifth inning. Corban scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth for the contest's final score.
Castronovo had a big game for the Warriors with three hits and two RBI in three at-bats.
Samantha Gutwig started and took the loss for Corban, allowing seven runs, though only three were earned, in 4 2/3 innings. Relief pitcher
Danielle Horne did not allow a base runner in the final 1 1/3 innings.
SOUTHERN OREGON 5, CORBAN 2 (
Box Score)
Again, it was a four-run inning by the Raiders, aided by a Corban error, which made the difference.
Southern Oregon scored an unearned run to take a 1-0 lead after two frames, but the Warriors got that back in the fourth with aggressive base running.
Kyrianna Sorensen hit a one-out single and stole second before advancing to third on a ground out. After
Kylie Durre walked, Sorensen and Durre executed a double steal with Sorensen scoring.
That led to the decisive fourth in which the Raiders made the most of two hits and two Corban errors to score their four runs.
The Warriors scored a run in the sixth on a single by Eilders and a two-out triple by Bejaran, but it was not enough to overcome the Raiders. Southern Oregon pitcher Sydney White kept Corban in check in the middle innings by recording nine consecutive strikeouts.
Both teams managed just four hits in the game.
Jessica Holsinger took the loss, allowing three runs, only one of which was earned, in 3 1/3 innings. She allowed two hits, walked four and struck out two. Horne finished up for the Warriors, allowed a pair of unearned runs in 2 2/3 innings of work.
"I felt like the girls competed today, but we just didn't execute well in a couple of situations where we had chances to make them pay," Corban head coach
Nathan Ohta said. "We were one swing away from a big inning multiple times but just didn't come up with the key hits. Our pitchers did a nice job today, we just need to execute a little better offensively and give then a few runs to work with. We weren't that far off today, and I think this weekend will make us better down the stretch."
The Warriors play on their home field for the first time next Friday when they host Northwest University in a conference doubleheader slated to start at 2 p.m.
