BOX SCORE COSTA MESA, Calif. –
Samantha Gutwig threw a four-hit shutout in the second game as the Corban Warriors split a Monday afternoon non-conference softball doubleheader with the host Vanguard University Lions.
Vanguard won the opener, 4-0, before Gutwig and the Warriors notched a 7-0 win in the second contest.
Following the split Corban is 7-3 for the season while Vanguard is 13-4.
GAME ONE: VANGUARD 4, CORBAN 0 (
Box Score)
The Warriors managed just one hit –
Breonna Bejaran's infield single in the fourth inning – against Vanguard pitcher Rachel Stalford, who struck out seven and walked three in her complete-game performance. Corban had just five base runners and was retired in order three times.
The host Lions scored all of the game's runs in the first inning on three singles, three walks and a hit batter. After her rough start, Corban pitcher
Jessica Holsinger ended up going the distance, allowing six hits while striking out eight and walking eight.
GAME TWO: CORBAN 7, VANGUARD 0 (
Box Score)
The visitors got on the scoreboard in a hurry, plating five runs on four hits in the first inning. With
Annie Owen on third base and
Aubrene Blas on second with no out, Bejaran hit a run-scoring single to drive in Owen with the first run. Bejaran stole second and
Courtney Castronovo followed with a double to right-center field to score Blas and Bejaran.
Kyrianna Sorensen hit a single through the middle to drive in Castronovo, and after Sorensen advanced a base on
Lounette Jackson's sacrifice bunt,
Kylie Durre hit a single to left to score Sorensen and make it 5-0.
The Warriors played add on with a pair of two-out runs in the third. Durre was hit by a pitch and
Raeann Dorcas,
Shelby Mauermann and Owen followed with singles, the latter two getting RBI on their hits.
Corban pitcher
Samantha Gutwig pitched out of trouble several times in the early innings. She left the bases loaded in the first and fourth innings and stranded two runners in the second. Her only 1-2-3 inning came in the third.
Vanguard got a runner on base in each of the final three innings but Gutwig was resilient and finished the game with a four-hit shutout. She walked six, hit two and struck out only one, but she made big pitches when they were needed. In addition, her teammates played errorless defense behind her. With the victory, Gutwig improved her season record to 2-1.
Bejaran and Durre led Corban's 10-hit offense with two hits apiece. As has been their habit at the outset of the 2014 season, the Warriors ran wild with six stolen bases, including two by leadoff hitter Owen.
After Vanguard scored all of its first-game runs in the first inning, Corban pitchers Holsinger and Gutwig combined to throw 13 consecutive innings of scoreless softball.
"I thought the girls played well today, and our pitchers did a good job of keeping Vanguard's offense in check," Corban head coach Nathan Ohta said. "They are a very good team, and we saw that in game one. Sam (Gutwig) had a great performance for us in the second game, and our offense really responded after being held in check the first seven innings. The girls stepped up to the challenge of playing a high quality team and really controlled game two from start to finish."
Corban continues its 10-game California road trip with a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader against Hope International University in El Cajon.
