Corban Softball Blasts Eastern Oregon

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 LA GRANDE – Corban broke out the bats in a big way and also got strong pitching performances on Monday in sweeping a pair of run-rule victories from Eastern Oregon in Cascade Collegiate Conference softball action at Anderson Field.

The Warriors scored eight runs in the fourth inning to take the opener, 11-2, and exploded for 10 runs in the second inning on the way to a 12-0 whitewash of the Mountaineers in the second contest.

CORBAN 11, EASTERN OREGON 2

Shelby Mauermann hit a first inning solo home run, her second round-tripper in as many games, to get the Warriors off and running. They added two runs in the third inning on Breonna Bejaran's two-out double before blowing the game wide open with eight runs in the fourth.

With the bases loaded following singles by McCayla Hoffman and Kylie Durre sandwiched around a walk to Paige Martin, Annie Owen hit a two-run double to right-centerfield. Mauermann drove in the third run with a ground out, and Kyrianna Sorensen followed with a double to left-center that drove made the score 7-0.

The scoring wasn't done, however, because with the bases loaded and two out McCayla Hoffman ripped a grand slam homer over the fence in right-centerfield. The home run was her second of the season.

Eastern Oregon scored twice in the fourth against starter Jessica Holsinger, but reliever Danielle Horne finished up by retiring five straight batters – three by strikeout – to end the game.

Holsinger picked up the win in the circle to improve her season record to 5-6. She struck out five in 3 1/3 innings of work.

Hoffman led the 10-hit offense with two hits and four RBI, while Bejaran added two hits and two RBI. Mauermann scored two runs and also drive in two.

CORBAN 12, EASTERN OREGON 0

The Warriors jumped all over EOU starter Lindsey Walchli for 11 runs on seven hits in just one inning.

They started with a run in the first on a leadoff double by Owen, a stolen base and a run-producing ground out by Sorensen.

And then the second inning happened.

Corban scored 10 runs on six hits, two walks, a hit batter and three errors. The visitors started by loading up the bases, and then the next seven consecutive batters drove in a run in one way or another. Those RBI went to Durre, Owen, Mauermann, Sorensen, Courtney Castronovo, Bejaran and Lounette Jackson. Hoffman then contributed a two-run single, and the final run scored on an error.

The Warriors added another run for good measure in the fifth on Raimee Sluder's pinch hit single.

Owen and Hoffman both had a pair of hits, Owen scored three runs and Hoffman drove in two, to pace Corban's nine-hit attack.

Samantha Gutwig was the beneficiary of her team's offensive largesse, but as it turned out she didn't need any more runs than what she was handed in the first inning. Gutwig gave up just two hits and a walk while striking out three in going the five-inning distance.

"The girls really played well today. It was great to see them put everything together at the same time," Corban head coach Nathan Ohta said."Our pitchers controlled both games the entire way, our defense was solid, and the girls really hit the ball well all the way through the lineup. We knew this was a big road trip for us, and I am proud of the way the girls stepped up to the challenge and came away with three big wins."

Next on the schedule for the Warriors is a Friday afternoon conference doubleheader against Southern Oregon, with first pitch slated for 2 p.m.
