Warriors Seek Turnaround After Losses to Concordia

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 PORTLAND – Concordia pushed Corban further away from the Cascade Collegiate Conference softball postseason tournament on Friday afternoon with 5-3 and 7-2 victories at Delta Park.

Concordia improved its conference record to 12-4 and its overall mark to 20-14 while at the same time the Warriors fell to 6-12 in the CCC and 19-17 overall.

Having lost five straight games, Corban now occupies sixth place in the conference with the top four advancing to postseason play. There is, however, still time to turn that around as the Warriors play 10 more CCC contests including a Saturday doubleheader at last-place Northwest.

CONCORDIA 5, CORBAN 3

The Warriors out-hit the Cavaliers, 6-4, but the hosts came up with several timely hits.

Corban got off to a great start when Annie Owen smacked a two-out, three-run homer in the second inning off of Lucy Baldovino, who less than a month ago threw a no-hitter at Corban. It was the third round-tripper of the season for Owen, a freshman centerfielder from Corvallis.

Baldovino walked the next batter and was replaced by McKenzie Marshall, who allowed no runs and four hits in finishing the final 5 1/3 innings. Corban got only one base runner as far as second base against Marshall.

Meanwhile, the Cavaliers took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the third, sandwiching a walk and single between two hit batters for their first run.  With two out and the bases loaded, Taylor Bussey struck the key blow of the game, clearing the sacks with a double. They added an insurance run on a two-out solo homer by Megan Malvick in the sixth inning.

Shelby Mauermann led Corban's six-hit offense with two singles. Jessica Holsinger took the loss, going the distance and allowing five earned runs on four hits while walking three and striking out five.

CONCORDIA 7, CORBAN 2

Again, it was Corban that got on the board first, scoring a run on singles by Mauermann and Kyrianna Sorensen, followed by a two-out error.

The Warriors had opportunities to add on but left five runners in scoring position in the first three innings. They finally scored their second run on a Concordia error in the top of the seventh, but by that time the Cavaliers had tallied all seven of their runs.

The initial four of those came in the second and were all unearned as the Warriors committed three errors to go along with four Cavs' singles. The three runs in the third came on Mariah Jimenez's three-run homer.

Corban finished with six hits compared to seven for Concordia. Samantha Gutwig took the loss for the Warriors and is now 7-5 for the season. She gave up seven hits, walked one and struck out one in her six innings of work.
