Pair of Jessicas Pitch Corban Past Mountaineers

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 SALEM – Jessica Slate and Jessica Holsinger gave Corban strong pitching performances as the Warriors swept Eastern Oregon, 9-1 and 4-1, in Cascade Collegiate Conference softball action Friday at Warrior Field.

With the victories, Corban improves to 23-17 overall and also stays in the CCC playoff hunt with a 10-12 league record. Eastern Oregon is now 17-19 overall and 7-17 in the CCC.

"Jess and Jess both threw really good ballgames for us today," Corban head coach Nathan Ohta said. "They controlled the games and were never really in any trouble. The first game our offense gave Jess Slate a lead and she did the rest from there. The second one was a little of the opposite where Jess Holsinger held them down and allowed our offense to break through. All in all it was a great performance all the way around."

CORBAN 9, EASTERN OREGON 1 (5 innings)

Slate, one of four Corban seniors, was outstanding in her complete-game effort. She improved her record to 5-4 by giving up just the one run on two hits while walking two and striking out two.

Her teammates gave her more than enough support by scoring five runs in the first inning, two in the second and two more in the fourth.

Annie Owen got the Warriors off to a strong start with a leadoff homer to center field. It was the fifth home run of the season for the freshman from Corvallis. Corban added a second run on a bases-loaded walk to McCayla Hoffman, and Lounette Jackson delivered the third with a fielder's choice ground out. Aubrene Blas finished the five-run outburst with a looping two-run single to left-center field.

In the second, Kyrianna Sorensen collected her second straight single, stole second, and then scored on a double by Breonna Bejaran. Jackson then followed with a double to center field to drive in Bejaran.

Eastern Oregon got its lone run in the top of the fourth when Katie Martell led off with a single and pinch runner Nicole Redd eventually scored on a ground out by Britnee Carman-Rice.

Corban's final two runs came in the fourth when Shelby Mauermann led off with a walk and scored on a double by Sorensen, who then scored on a single by Courtney Castronovo.

The Warriors ended up with 12 hits including a 3-for-3 performance by Sorensen and a 2-for-2 effort by Kylie Durre.

Lindsey Walchli allowed nine runs on 10 hits in just three innings and took the loss, her record dropping to 16-15.

CORBAN 4, EASTERN OREGON 1

Needing a win to stay in the postseason hunt, the Warriors broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the fifth inning and one more in the sixth.

Corban broke up a pitcher's duel between Holsinger and EOU's Lily Smith, scoring a run in the third inning when Owen was hit by a pitch and later scored on Sorensen's base hit.

The Mountaineers got the run back in the top of the fifth when Andrea Roeder legged out a leadoff triple to right-center field and scored one out later on a wild pitch.

Facing a 1-1 deadlock, the hosts responded with a two-run fifth inning. Pinch hitter Raeann Dorcas led off with a walk and, with one out, Owen followed with a single to right field. Both runners moved up a base on a passed ball, and Mauermann delivered Dorcas with a sacrifice fly. Owen advanced to third on the fly ball and then scored on an errant relay throw at third base.

Corban's final run came in the sixth when Courtney Castronovo kept alive an eight-game hitting streak with a double before scoring on a single by Jackson.

Jackson had a pair of hits to lead Corban's six-hit attack. Holsinger picked up the win in the circle, allowing one run on three hits in five innings of work. The hard-throwing left-hander walked three and struck out five. Danielle Horne retired six straight EOU batters over the final two innings to collect her third save.

Smith took the loss and is now 1-4 for the season. She allowed three runs on four hits in five innings. Walchli allowed a run and two hits in one inning for the Mountaineers.
