BOX SCORE REDDING, Calif. – The Corban University men's soccer team embarked on its 2014 campaign on Thursday when it took on Simpson University (Calif.) on the road, and while using a variety of players, the Warriors defeated the Red Hawks in dominating fashion, 3-0. The triumph marks the fourth-straight season-opening win for Corban and second-consecutive victory in a season-opener vs. Simpson.
The Warriors started the game out on fire, scoring two goals inside of the first two minutes. Senior forward Arsinio Walker (Kingston, Jamaica) registered Corban's first goal of the season after just one minute, finding the back of the net after receiving a pass from sophomore defender Nathaniel Cheney (Clarkston, Wash).
Less than 30 seconds later, sophomore forward Bobby Hutchin (Vancouver, Wash.) stole the ball from the Simpson goalkeeper and scored to double the advantage.
From that point on in the first half, the Warriors continued to pile on the pressure, but could not find the finishing touch again during the first 45 minutes despite outshooting the Red Hawks, 11-0.
The second stanza was much of the same for Corban, as the shot total continued to rise while the Warriors held the large majority of possession. The third goal finally came when senior forward Derik Chaney (Helena, Mont.) picked out senior midfielder Andrew Stenberg (Hood River, Ore.) in front of goal, and Stenberg made no mistake with his header and put the Warriors comfortably in front, 3-0.
Defensively as a team, Corban allowed just one shot during entire game, resulting in a 22-1 total shot count. Senior goalkeeper Steven Mason (Santa Rosa, Calif.) played the full 90 minutes for the Warriors, earning the win while registering the shutout.
"It was pleasing to see the team assert our system early, and ultimately control the flow of the match today against an improved Simpson team," commented head men's soccer coach Aaron Lewis. "We want to continue to refine some of our movements, combinations, and shots on frame as we look to be more lethal near goal this season. I am excited to take the information we gained today, and apply it to Saturday's contest against a very quality Menlo side."
Walker and sophomore midfielder Quamie Dinnall (May Pen, Jamaica) led the way offensively for Corban with four shots apiece, while Chaney and sophomore midfielder Kemar Prince (Kingston, Jamaica) tallied three shots each.
Corban (1-0) returns to action on Saturday when it takes on Menlo College in Redding, Calif. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
