BOX SCORE OLYMPIA, Wash. - In a truly pivotal match for the Corban University men's soccer team, the Warriors came to play and returned to their winning ways on Tuesday afternoon, upending The Evergreen State College Geoducks, 3-0. Senior midfielder Eliseo Santana (Idaho Falls, Idaho) played his best match of the year to date, serving as the playmaker all game long while producing the clutch plays in the key moments en route to the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) triumph.
For Corban, it was its first victory in five games after suffering a rough patch of three defeats and a tie over the past four matches. In addition, it is the Warriors' third win of the season, with all three triumphs coming via the 3-0 score-line. Furthermore, it is Corban's first win over Evergreen State since October 19, 2011 when the Warriors topped the Geoducks, 5-3.
Santana got things rolling for the Navy and Gold in the 10th minute when he blasted a free kick that found its way through a number of bodies and skipped off the wet grass and into the goal. For Santana, it was his first score of the 2014 campaign.
After a fairly even first 45 minutes overall, the two sides went into the halftime break with the score still at 1-0 in favor of the road squad. The Warriors held a slight advantage in shots, 6-5, while the Geoducks (2-4-1, 2-1-0 CCC) notched three corner-kicks to just one for Corban.
In the second half, it was clear that the Warriors did not want to rest on just a one-goal lead, pushing the pace of the game and taking it to the Geoducks right away. After a couple of shots were saved or missed their marks, senior forward Arsinio Walker (Kingson, Jamaica) doubled the Warriors' advantage in the 53rd minute when he connected on a cross from sophomore midfielder Quamie Dinnall (May Pen, Jamaica) and put his shot inside the left post and into the back of the net. For Walker, it was his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Santana acted as the provider on Corban's final goal of the evening in the 68th minute of play, whipping in a free kick to sophomore midfielder Kemar Prince (Kingston, Jamaica) who eventually gathered himself and slotted the ball past the Evergreen goalkeeper, putting the Navy and Gold up by a trio of goals.
Senior goalkeeper Steven Mason (Santa Rosa, Calif.) did his job over the course of the final 22 minutes of the match, directing traffic, making five saves in the game, and ultimately earning his third shutout of the campaign.
For the match, Corban led the Geoducks in shots, 13-11, and in shots-on-goal, 9-5. Walker registered a team-high four shots, while Santana tallied three.
"It was enjoyable to see the team work well together to not allow Evergreen time to play," said head coach Aaron Lewis. "That work off the ball helped create chances that guys did well to finish. Eliseo's production today was important and something I think we can see more of in the coming weeks."
Quick starts have been key for the Warriors this year, as in their three wins in 2014, they have now outscored opponents by a total of four goals inside of the first 10 minutes.
Corban (3-3-1, 1-1-1 CCC) gets a chance to take on its opponent from this past Saturday once again on this upcoming Saturday, September 27, as the Warriors play host to Northwest Christian University (1-4-2, 0-2-1 CCC) at Warrior Field. The two teams played to a 1-1 draw just a few days ago in Eugene, so both sides will get a shot to make amends and come out victorious in Salem. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. If you can't make it to the match, be sure to follow via live stats and the live video feed with play-by-play commentary.
