Corban Softball Registers Trio of Wins on Day Two of Simpson Tournament

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 | BOX SCORE 3

REDDING, Calif. - The (RV) Corban University softball team sure knows how to win in dramatic fashion, as for the second-straight day, the Warriors left it until late to make the big-time game-winning plays. The Navy and Gold finished the Simpson Tournament strong on Saturday, winning all three games to finish the season-opening road trip with a  5-1 record.

***Note: Full statistics not yet available for all three games.

Game one on Saturday saw the Warriors come from behind to take down Hope International University, 2-1. Just like on Friday, it was sophomore outfielder Annie Owen (Corvallis, Ore.) who came up clutch for the Navy and Gold, as she crushed the go-ahead two-run homerun in the top of the seventh inning, propelling the Warriors in front by one run.

Continuing her strong start to her Warrior career, junior pitcher Emily Buhrkuhl (Stockton, Calif.) finished what she started, throwing a complete game while allowing just one run, closing the door on Hope International in the bottom half of the seventh to secure the victory for Corban.

In game two of the day, the Warriors shocked No. 14 Biola University in eight innings, 2-1. Biola scored in the first frame to take the early advantage, but Corban responded in the top of the third when sophomore right-fielder Taylor Eilders (Cameron Park, Calif.) doubled through the left side, scoring sophomore left-fielder Kylie Durre (Bend, Ore.) on the play to tie the game.

The game remained tied all of the way until extra innings, and freshman first baseman Jaslyn Rush (Stockton, Calif.) used her aggressive base-running style to get the Warriors in front, stealing third base and then advancing home via a throwing error by the Biola catcher.

Building on the theme of clutch hitting and fantastic pitching, Warrior junior pitcher Jessica Holsinger (Eagle, Idaho) went the distance in the circle for Corban, registering an eight-inning seven-hit performance while allowing just the one run. She also struck out five batters in the process.

At the plate in the exciting triumph, Owen and Durre led the way with a pair of hits each.

In the final contest of the Simpson Tournament for Corban, the Warriors faced off against the University of British Columbia, and for the second-consecutive day, it took less than seven innings for the Navy and Gold to dismiss the Thunderbirds, winning in six innings on Saturday, 11-3.

In the triumph, both Eilders and senior third baseman Kyrianna Sorensen (Salem, Ore.) blasted long balls, while junior pitcher Danielle Horne (Vacaville, Calif.) pitched four innings in the triumph while allowing just one run.

"I'm really proud of how the team played today," said head coach Nathan Ohta. "Our pitchers gave us three outstanding games, and gave our offense a chance to win against some very stout competition. The girls battled and gutted out a couple of really good wins to finish off an outstanding 5-1 road trip. We showed a lot of improvement over the weekend and are leaving a better team than when we came."

Corban (5-1) returns to action next weekend when it travels to Menlo College for doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday.
