PREVIEW: Corban Softball Primed for Big Performance as CCC Tournament Hosts

SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University softball team is in the midst of a record-breaking season, one that has seen the Warriors capture the 2017 Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) regular-season title and book its ticket to the NAIA National Tournament. As the regular-season champion, the Warriors will now host a six-team conference tournament over the weekend to determine the CCC Tournament Champion.

As the CCC regular-season champion, the Warriors are the No. 1 overall seed in the double-elimination tournament and are joined by No. 2-seeded Southern Oregon University as the teams that receive a bye on day one of the tournament. The opening game of the tournament features No. 4-seeded Eastern Oregon University and No. 5-seeded College of Idaho, with the winner meeting Corban later in the day. Game two of the day features the No. 3-seeded Oregon Tech Owls taking on No. 6-seeded University of British Columbia, with the winner meeting Southern Oregon in the final game of day one.

Corban (38-9, 22-5 CCC) is led offensively by senior Iris Rodriguez, who ranks sixth in the CCC with a .415 batting average. On the year, she has registered 135 at-bats, scoring 28 runs and recording 56 hits along with 36 RBI. Along with Rodriguez, junior Maddy Melton, sophomore Jessie Isham, and senior Taylor Eilders place in the CCC Top 15, ranking 10-12 in batting average, respectively. Melton comes into the tournament with 39 runs scored, 67 hits, and 17 RBI, while Isham has scored a CCC-best 53 runs, along with 61 hits and 55 RBI. Eilders rounds out Corban's offense with 49 runs scored, 70 hits, and 39 RBI.

Some of the CCC's best hitters will take part in the tournament, as Destiny Turner from College of Idaho boasts the conference-best batting average of .544, while Tara Moates leads the way for Oregon Tech with 49 RBI on the year. In addition, Kelsey Randall from SOU boasts a conference-best 79 hits, hitting at a .446 clip.

The Warriors bring in the two best pitchers in the CCC based on ERA, as junior Sabrina Boyd and senior Allie Mendez rank No.1 and No. 2 respectively among their competitors. Boyd, who boasts a 19-2 record on the year, leads the CCC with a 1.61 ERA and has struck out 67 batters. Mendez, with a record of 13-4, has pitched 124 innings on her way to striking out 69 batters with a 2.43 ERA.

To rival Corban in the circle, Karlee Coughlin from SOU ranks third among CCC pitchers based on ERA, and has recorded a 2.53 ERA along with a 13-1 record. Rounding out the top five pitchers are Oregon Tech's Loryn Williams and C of I's Colette Robert, who boast ERAs of 2.64 and 2.72, respectively.

For EOU, Hailey Kline leads the way in the circle with a 2.99 ERA, while at the dish, Lauren Burchak boasts a .423 batting average. For C of I, in addition to Robert and Turner, Delaney Atkins boasts a .336 batting average for the Mountaineers. And for UBC, maybe the hottest team right now in the CCC as winners of 10 of its final 12 games of the year, Hillary Strelau leads the way with a .426 batting average at the dish, while Lindsay Ogilvie owns a 4.00 ERA in the circle.
