LA GRANDE, Ore. – On Monday afternoon, the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) office announced Corban track & field's Michael Schmidt as the CCC Field Athlete of the Week. The award comes on the heels of his historic performance at last week's CCC Multi-Event Championships, during which he shattered his own school record and became Corban's first-ever conference champion in the decathlon.
Schmidt finished in the top-three of all 10 events on Thursday and Friday, claiming first in the 400 meters (50.09 seconds), javelin (157' 6") and 1,500 meters (4:30.80) along the way. The end result was the program's new all-time standard in the combined events, as he racked up 6,763 points overall. That mark lands the talented junior at No. 2 on the NAIA national performance list, just over 100 points back of Westmont's Pieter Top (6,868 points) for the top mark in the country.
The two will almost assuredly cross paths at the upcoming NAIA Track & Field National Championships, which are slated to take place on May 23-25 in Gulf Shores, Ala. Schmidt competed at the national meet last year, earning All-American accolades for his sixth-place finish (6,612 points) on the NAIA's biggest stage.
Sports Information Directors from throughout the conference nominate and vote upon the CCC's Athletes of the Week.
Schmidt and the rest of the Corban track & field team will compete next at the CCC Championships down in Ashland, Ore. The two-day meet, occurring on May 10-11, is hosted by Southern Oregon University.
