Corban Track & Field’s Michael Schmidt Named NAIA Field Athlete of the Week

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The awards just keep coming for Corban men's track & field superstar Michael Schmidt, who was named the NAIA Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week on Wednesday after his championship performance in the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Multi-Event Championships last week. Schmidt becomes the first-ever Corban field athlete to receive national Athlete of the Week honors.

"It has been a great year for Michael," said head coach Norm Berney. "Any reward he receives is well deserved; he has put so much time and effort into the decathlon. In addition, his No. 2 ranking on the national performance list is a first for any of our track & field athletes."

Schmidt already claimed CCC Red Lion Field Athlete of the Week honors for his conference title in the combined events last Thursday and Friday, clinching Corban's first-ever CCC title in the decathlon. The reigning NAIA All-American set a new record for both himself and the Warrior track & field program by compiling 6,763 points at the meet.

"We have never had a field athlete attain this award," Berney added, "And if he keeps the focus he has shown these last three years, he will continue to get national recognition."

The junior from Battle Ground, Wash. will compete next at the CCC Championships down in Ashland, Ore., which will take place on May 10-11. After that, he will travel to Gulf Shores, Ala. for the NAIA Track & Field Championships on May 23-25.
