ASHLAND, Ore. – In search of the program's third-straight appearance in the NAIA National Tournament, the No. 17-ranked Corban University softball team is thoroughly equipped to contend for the crown at this weekend's Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Tournament, presented by U.S. Bank.
Tournament Central
The Warriors (34-12, 19-8 CCC) will enter the postseason as the No. 4 seed, slated to compete against No. 5-seeded Carroll College (19-22, 11-15 CCC) at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning. The two teams last met on March 1 and 2, with the Navy and Gold sweeping the four game set by scores of 7-3, 4-0, 8-1, and 2-1.
Corban hit at a blistering .321 clip as a team this spring, led by Jessie Isham (.471, seven home runs, 47 RBIs), Sam Woodley (.390, four home runs, 35 RBIs), and 2019 newcomers Makiah Johnson (.322, three home runs, 21 RBIs) and Madison Wyllie (.349, three home runs, 20 RBIs). In total, seven members of the Warrior roster collected batting averages of at least .300 during the spring campaign.
Rachel White (9-3, 2.27 ERA) has emerged as one of the squad's top starters in the circle, and Sarah Probasco leads the team in wins with her 13-3 record and 2.62 ERA. The Navy and Gold ranked third in the conference in pitching, finishing the regular-season with an impressive 2.89 team ERA.
The Fighting Saints rely heavily on their offensive trio of Anna ApRoberts, Amber Brewer, and Brooke Yarnall. ApRoberts compiled a season batting average of .352, blasting three home runs and driving in 26 runs, while Brewer (.345, three home runs, 26 RBIs) and Yarnall (.327) also reach base at high rates. Pitching has been the chief area of uncertainty for Carroll during the 2019 season, with no Fighting Saint pitcher possessing an ERA under four. Tess Eaton (7-9, 4.37 ERA) and Allison Williams (10-6, 5.11 ERA) lead the squad in appearances in the circle.
The winner of the contest will play again at 2 p.m. on the same day against No. 1-seeded Southern Oregon, while the loser will participate in an 11:30 a.m. elimination game on Saturday.
The CCC's first automatic berth to the NAIA National Tournament went to the CCC regular-season champion and CCC tournament host, Southern Oregon. The conference's second and final automatic berth to nationals goes to the winner of the CCC Tournament. If the Raiders were to win the tournament, then the tournament's runner-up finisher would advance.
