SALEM, Ore. – The (RV) Corban University men's wrestling team squared off against a pair of top Northwest adversaries inside of the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center on Sunday, hosting North Idaho College (ranked sixth in the NJCAA) for an exhibition, while also battling Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) rival (RV) Southern Oregon University.
In the morning exhibition dual, the Cardinals claimed a 34-13 victory over the Navy and Gold. Then, in the afternoon contest, a late Warrior comeback bid fell short in a 25-18 loss to the Raiders.
In the dual against North Idaho, the visitors jumped out to a quick 15-0 lead, winning by way of forfeit at 125 pounds before garnering a pin at 133 and a gritty overtime decision in the 141-pound clash.
The Warriors showed their resilience by issuing a strong response, rattling off three-straight victories to jump back into the contest.
Kane Nixon (149 pounds) kick-started the rally, pinning Parker Corwin at the 4:44 mark to energize the Navy and Gold. Yasyf Sorensen then followed that up with a determined win in the 157-pound match, outlasting No. 7-ranked Weston Presser (decision, 6-2) in a low-scoring battle.
No 13-ranked David Rubio made it three-straight victories with an impressive showing in the 165-pound bout, winning by way of major decision (13-3) over the Cardinals' Manaiakalani Wolfgramm to pull the Warriors within two in the team tally (15-13). North Idaho answered back by winning the final four matches, however, sealing the exhibition triumph.
It serves as yet another valuable test for the Navy and Gold, as North Idaho boasts eight wrestlers ranked in the NJCAA top-10, and Sunday's dual provides yet another opportunity for Corban to measure itself against top grapplers in the Northwest.
In the afternoon CCC clash, Southern Oregon got an early boost via a pair of forfeit wins at 125 and 133. The Raiders then earned triumphs at 141 (Nick Peterson def. Ryan Davis, major decision, 9-1), 149 (Travis Thorpe def. Kane Nixon, decision, 9-4), and 157 (Aaron Gandara def. Sorensen, decision, 4-0), taking a commanding 22-0 advantage.
No. 13-ranked Rubio put a stop to the Raiders' run, pinning Max Miller in the first period (2:41) to cap off an undefeated day for the standout 165-pound grappler.
In the 174-pound clash, SOU's Noah Talavera secured a 12-5 triumph over Matthew Bartlett to put the dual out of reach, giving the visitors an insurmountable 19-point advantage with three matches left.
Corban won each of those three remaining contests, however, as Tyson Stover topped Ayden Wolgamott (decision, 8-2) at 184 pounds, Macoy Christman defeated John White (decision, 4-0) at 197, and Nick Nelson pinned Curtis Strahm (1:41) in the heavyweight class.
Corban (3-2) has just one event left before the end of the calendar year, traveling to Reno, Nev. For the Reno Tournament of Champions on December 19.
