LA GRANDE, Ore. – Freshman student-athletes Brayden Boyd and Bo Davis each took home the individual titles for their respective weight classes today at the Mountaineer Open, as the (RV) Corban University Men's Wrestling team had yet another solid showcase in their non-conference slate showcases.
"The group once again showed up ready to roll today," Warriors' Interim Head Coach Kary Hadden said after the final results of their tournament were tallied. "Bo and Brayden led this group of young men with dignity and class and demonstrated what this team is truly capable of."
Boyd opened the tournament in the 125-weight class, winning by major decision over Eastern Oregon University's Adrian Guevara in impressive fashion. He followed up his opening round with back-to-back pins of Hunter Arnett from Grays Harbor (1:11), and Avian Martinez (2:06) who was wrestling unattached. A forfeit in the final round gave Boyd the weight class title.
Three-straight pins following an opening round bye for Davis put him in the championship round, where he faced Warner Pacific's David Campbell for the tournament 133-weight class title. Davis and Campbell battled for three hard-fought rounds, but it was Davis who came out on top for the sudden victory to win 5-3 in extra time.
Corban freshman Blake Runion bounced back from an quarterfinal loss to Campbell to take home a third place finish in the 133-class, while freshman Luke Jensen grabbed 15.0 team points in a fourth place finish for him at his 141-weight class.
The 149-weight class was won overall by Oregon State University's Riley Gurr, who defeated Corban senior Michael Murphy in the championship bout to give the Warriors both the second and third place finishes, with freshman Wylder Kraght taking the third overall spot with two pins, a major decision and a 14-8 final decision to end his day.
Warriors' junior Matthew Bartlett rode a fall, a major decision and another decision into the championship round of the 174s, where he fell in four minutes to Oregon State's Isaiah Anderson for another top two finish for Corban.
Redshirt freshman German Munoz earned an NCAA DI victory over Washington State University's David Darroch in the third-place match for the 184-weight class.
In a smaller 197-class of wrestlers, Corban senior Tyler Moore needed just a pair of decisions to reach the championship round, earning another 12.0 team points in a fall to EOU's Jay Smith.
Transfer junior Sven Lukner finally took a loss in his collegiate wrestling career in the quarterfinals of the 285-weight class, but battled back to win three-straight (one decision, two pins) to make the third-place match through the consolation bracket. Lukner squared off with Mounties' Darrian Hoobery for the bronze placing, where Sven came out on top of a 4-0 decision to give the Warriors their ninth top-three placement of the day.
Corban Men's Wrestling returns to the Willamette Valley for the Mike Clock Open next Sunday, November 13th, looking to capitalize on another local tournament before a pair of huge home dual meets that following week.
