Women’s Lacrosse Season Preview – Warriors Ready for Sophomore Campaign

SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University women's lacrosse team was electrifying in its first season of competition in 2021, and now the Warriors are just days away from their official opener for the program's second season. Corban will host NCAA Division III Pacific University on Saturday, February 19 at 1 p.m. on campus.

Last year, the Warriors earned their first-ever win as a program against the Boxers, winning on the road in Forest Grove in a hard-fought 14-12 battle.

This year's duel against the Boxers will kick off a stretch of three-straight games against NCAA Division III foes, as Corban will follow up Saturday's matchup with games against Whitman College and Whitworth University on February 25-26.

After a 7v7 exhibition against Multnomah University on March 4, the Navy and Gold will close out its regular season with a four-game homestand, giving Warrior fans plenty of opportunity to see the exciting young program compete on campus.

"Our early-season scrimmages have been against really competitive programs, and they're helping us learn a lot from our weaknesses to come into this season wiser and stronger," head coach Kylie McMinn said. "Fall ball showed that we have exponential growth from last year to this year, and we're looking forward to seeing what God does with the next building block year in the life of Corban women's lacrosse!"

The Warriors will look to benefit from a strong core that has now had a year of experience under its belt. Leading goal-scorer Sydney Davis (15 goals in 2021) will be back this spring, as will dynamic offensive threat Geneen Impreso (five goals in 2021).

Sarah Whitbey serves an invaluable role on the field with her versatility and leadership, and she will return to anchor the Navy and Gold midfield after notching four goals and a team-leading two assists last season. Devyn Davis and Joanna Wattimena tied for the team lead with nine ground balls last year, and their experience will be pivotal to the success of Corban's defensive core.

That defense will be anchored in net by Payton Nuse, who turned in a strong rookie season last year with 30 saves and a .417 save percentage as Corban's goalie.

In addition to the returners mentioned above, McMinn brought in seven dynamic newcomers to the fold this spring. Warrior fans will want to keep a particularly close eye on Alayna Van De Ven—a talented rookie defender from Arizona—and Josie Brence—a two-sport Corban student-athlete with elite athleticism—who could each make a significant impact from the onset of their Warrior careers.

Without formal conference oversight, there will be no conference tournament for the Navy and Gold to participate in this spring. This will be just the second year that the NAIA has hosted a national championship in women's lacrosse, and that will take place on May 4-7 in Southfield, Mich.
