Warrior Baseball Sweeps Split Doubleheader Versus Oregon Tech and Bushnell

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The Corban University baseball team swept their Saturday twin bill with Oregon Tech and Bushnell. The Warriors took on the Owls in the first game of the day winning by a final score of 4-2. The nightcap saw the Navy and Gold ride another electric outing on the mound to a 3-0 win over the Beacons.

"It was good to see us put together a complete day at the yard," said Head Coach Derek Legg.

Game one saw the Warriors take on the Owls in a neutral site contest with Corban serving as the home squad.

Both teams starting pitchers threw up scoreless first innings, and it was the Warriors who yet again drew first blood in the contest in the bottom of the second frame. Kyle Clay laced a double just inside the third base bag and eventually moved to third on an OIT wild pitch. Infielder Reese Fawley drove in Clay with a sacrifice fly to left field and provided Corban with a 1-0 lead.

After a shutdown inning in the top of the third by Warrior started Preston Johnson, the offense went back to work. Brad Pellkofer led off the bottom of the third with a double to left field and was bunted over to third base by veteran Maxwell Jeffrey. Newcomer Cale Thompson, who continues to shine in a Warrior uniform, scored Pellkofer with an RBI-single to right field. The biggest swing of the game then came from Corban DH Kairos Torres-Umi who launched a first pitch fastball over the left field bullpen to extend the lead to 4-0.

Johnson would toss four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, before running into a bit of trouble in the top of the fifth. A leadoff walk, followed by a Michael Tarakchyan double set up the Owls with runners at second and third and no outs to chase Johnson from the ballgame. The Warriors turned to sidewinder Trevor Szczepanek who allowed both inherited runners to score but managed to escape the inning without further damage to hold the Corban lead to 4-2.

From the fifth inning on, both teams pitching staffs were at their best. Szczepanek turned in three shutout innings before giving way to southpaw Braedyn Chong who delivered two perfect innings, striking out three to lockdown the save and a 4-2 win for the Navy and Gold.

Game two saw the Navy and Gold take on the Bushnell Beacons for the second day in a row.

Offense was at a premium in the nightcap, as the Warriors vaulted out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning, and the score would hold there the rest of the way.

Freshman Ryan Clay started the big first inning for Corban as he laced a single to left field. Cale Thompson would follow with a gritty walk and Maxwell Jeffrey would score Clay with an RBI single to center continuing his torrid stretch at the plate. The offense wasn't done however, as clutch hitting Brian Landon delivered with a huge two-out double to left field scoring Thompson and Jeffery to give the Warriors an early 3-0 advantage.

That 3-0 lead was more than enough for reigning CCC Pitcher of the Week Zack Simon who was dominant en route to his second win of the campaign.

The electric right hander would turn in a line score of 9 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 9 K, on just 90 pitches, in his complete game performance. It was one of the more dominate performances in recent memory for the Navy and Gold as Simon tossed 8.2 no-hit innings, before a fly ball to right field was lost in the overcast sky for the Beacons first knock. It truly was as close as you can come to a no-hitter, as the next Beacon bounced out to short. All in all, it was a fantastic outing for Simon who has now opened the season with 19 scoreless innings.

The Warrior pitching staff has delivered all season long for Corban, with Simon at the forefront, but through 10 games the squads ERA is a solid 2.20, with a miniscule WHIP of 0.99. It is clear the depth of the staff could be one of the biggest assets moving forward.

Corban (6-3-1) will return to the diamond in Springfield tomorrow for a single game against Bushnell. The game is again set to be played at Hamlin Sports Complex in Springfield, Ore. with first pitch slated for 11 a.m.
