GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The second-ever Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Women's Wrestling Championships, presented by U.S. Bank, will take place this Sunday, and the (RV) Corban University women's wrestling team is prepared to battle with some of the NAIA's best programs in the fight for conference supremacy.
"These young women have put in the work, now it's just a matter of getting their minds ready to compete at their best," said head coach Stryder Davis. "I'm excited to see their hard work pay off!"
No. 6-ranked Southern Oregon is the early favorite to win this weekend's team title, though No. 10-ranked University of Providence (Mont.)—who serves as the host institution for the tournament—No. 17-ranked Eastern Oregon, and (RV) Simpson University have all received votes in the national top-20 poll, as have the Warriors.
The top-three finishers in each weight class will automatically earn All-Conference designation.
Corban's participants at each weight will be as follows:
101 – Brooke Burrows
116 – Kendall Martin
116 – Tess Barnett
155 – Gabrielle Tata-Rodrigues
155 – Alexys Zepeda
Zepeda (10-3) is ranked 13th in the NAIA at 155 pounds, and possesses a strong shot of contending for a CCC crown on Sunday. Tata-Rodrigues (10-5) also spent much of the 2021-22 campaign in the NAIA top-20 in the weight division, and has shown herself more than capable of competing stride-for-stride with the CCC's best.
Southern Oregon's No. 1-ranked Sienna Ramirez creates the biggest challenge for the aforementioned duo, and No. 6-ranked Dempsi Talkington (Eastern Oregon)—who Zepeda beat in their matchup on February 10)—also enters Sunday's championships as a top-10 grappler at 155 pounds.
Both Martin (6-4) and Barnett (10-5) received national attention at 116 pounds in the first half of the winter campaign, and the tandem will look to climb the ladder against the talented CCC ensemble; Barnett has impressed in her rookie season, and is tied with Zepeda and Tata-Rodrigues for the team's most wins this year with 10. Burrows enters Sunday's action with a 3-12 record, and will compete in the 101-pound bracket for Davis and company.
