Corban Baseball Swept by Bushnell

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The Corban University baseball team dropped a pair of CCC games against Bushnell for the second day in a row. The Beacons took game one by a score of 4-1 and topped the Warriors 9-7 in game two to earn the weekend sweep.

The Warriors turned to ace Zack Simon in game one of the day, and he delivered his fifth quality start of the campaign. The righty went 7 strong innings, allowing seven hits, one earned run, and struck out eight. Unfortunately, for the second consecutive day, unearned runs haunted Corban as the Beacons scored a run on a passed ball, and an error to take a 3-0 advantage through seven innings of play.

The Warriors offense struggled to breakthrough against Beacon starter Abbott Haffar who held the Warriors scoreless through seven, before eventually allowing an RBI-single to Kyle Clay with two outs in the top of the eighth inning. Haffar would escape further damage and close the book on his solid start.

The Beacons answered back with a Jeff Fripp solo home run in the bottom of the eighth and turned the ball over to Ethan Paulson who earned the save in the Beacons 4-1 game one victory.

Game two again started promising as the Navy and Gold struck first with a Cale Thompson sacrifice fly in the second frame to give Corban a 1-0 lead early.

Bushnell would not go quietly as they answered immediately with two runs in the second and four in the third to extend their advantage.

The Navy and Gold got a bases loaded double from veteran utility Maxwell Jeffrey in the top of the fourth inning, which scored all three runners, to cut the deficit to 6-4.

Yet again, the shutdown inning evaded the Warriors as Bushnell struck for one run on a solo home run to go back up 7-4.

Corban would plate one run in the fifth and Bushnell would strike for two, and the score would hold at 9-5 until the ninth inning.

Corban played two runners on a Kairos Torres-Umi double, but the Beacons got a hard line out to hold off the comeback attempt and finish the weekend sweep.

James Arend was a bright spot for the Navy and Gold in relief in game two, tossing 3.2 innings and allowing just one baserunner. Jeffrey notched three hits in the contest while Torres-Umi had a four-hit performance.

Corban (12-13-1, 0-4) will have a short turnaround as they travel to Willamette University on Tuesday for a single nine inning contest. Corban is back in action for CCC play on April 1st against No. 3-ranked Lewis and Clark State College.
