Martin’s CG Helps Corban Baseball Beat No. 3 LCSC, Earning Series Split

PORTLAND, Ore. – For the second time in as many days, the Corban University baseball team got a complete-game performance on the mound, riding a career day on the hill from Nate Martin to a nail-biting 2-1 victory over No. 3 Lewis-Clark State College on Sunday.

With the win, Corban splits the four-game Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) series with the squad from Lewiston, which entered this weekend with a 28-game winning streak and a 33-1 overall record.

"I'm very proud of the guys this weekend," said head coach Derek Legg. "Going into the weekend, I challenged them to compete every pitch, and they did that. Our pitchers dominated the strike zone early and often; we're looking forward to competing this week in practice."

Martin's day began with a run from the visitors in the top of the first, as LCSC struck first on an RBI sac fly from Aidan Nagle. The run was aided by a defensive miscue earlier in the frame, making it an unearned tally.

Corban bounced back with a run of its own in the home half of the first, as Kairos Torres-Umi lofted a bloop double down the left-field line to score Ryan Clay.

That's where the score would stay until the fifth, when Keenan O'Brien rudely greeted LC reliever Drake Borschowa, blasting a hanging 0-2 curveball over the left field fence to put the Navy and Gold ahead, 2-1. It was O'Brien's first long ball of the season, and it couldn't have come at a better time.

That would prove to be all Martin would need on the mound, as the Las Vegas, Nev. native retired 12 of the last 13 batters he faced—including nine-straight to finish the game—to seal the victory. In total, Martin struck out five, walked one, allowed just the one unearned run, and surrendered just four hits, tying a season-low for the high-powered LC offense.

It is the first time this season that LCSC has been held without an earned run in a game.

The Corban pitching staff has been absolutely exceptional against LC State this year; the squad from Lewiston entered this weekend with the most runs in the entire NAIA, averaging 10.08 runs per game heading into Sunday's game.

Lewis-Clark has been held to four or less runs just six times in 2022, and five of those have been at the hands of Corban, including four games where the Navy and Gold has surrendered two or less runs to the 19-time NAIA National Champions.

Offensively, the Navy and Gold's five hits came courtesy of Clay (1-for-4, R), Torres-Umi (1-for-3, RBI), Scott Artzer (1-for-3), O'Brien (1-for-2, R, RBI), and Aidan Bunn (1-for-2).

Corban (15-16-1, 2-6 CCC) will look to build upon its weekend with another big conference series next weekend, hitting the road to face off with College of Idaho on April 9-10. Saturday's doubleheader is slated to begin at 12 p.m. MT, and the following day's twin bill will get underway at 11 a.m. MT.
