BOX SCORE
PORTLAND, Ore. – For the second year in a row, Corban's women's soccer team had its season ended in the Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament semifinals thanks to a 7-0 loss at the hands of the NAIA's No. 7-ranked Cavaliers of Concordia Saturday afternoon at Delta Park.
At the conclusion of the program's 10th winning season under fourteenth-year head coach
Marty Ziesemer, the Warriors close out the 2009 campaign at 9-7-3 overall. Meanwhile, Concordia moves into the championship game with a win-loss record of 17-2 and will look to avenge its only loss of the conference schedule next Saturday against No. 1-seeded The College of Idaho beginning at noon in Caldwell, Idaho.
Under clear skies with the temperature in the high 50s, Concordia wasted no time in starting the scoring when Angie Turner knocked home her sixth goal of the season off an assist from Jessica Ramback 29 seconds into the game. Ramback began the eventual game-winning scoring play with a pass through the middle before Turner unleashed a shot from 14 yards out that ricocheted off the crossbar and into the back of the net.
The host Cavaliers would not stop the scoring there, as CU notched three more goals within a span of less than 20 minutes that included back-to-back goals by Ramback.
Heading into the half, Corban had registered only one shot in the 39th minute off the foot of junior
Katie Hanson (Salem, Ore.) and trailed by four goals after the opening 45 minutes of play.
The second half was a little better for the visiting Warriors, as they controlled most of the offensive flow. Unfortunately, Corban could not put a lid of its goal nor could the Warriors crack Concordia's defense.
Concordia closed out the game scoring three second half goals, as Ramback assisted on a goal and ended the contest with her third goal of the evening at the 74:31 mark.
Sophomore
Amanda Mendenhall (Windsor, Calif.) had the best scoring chance for Corban in the game's final six minutes, as she was awarded a free kick from 35 yards out that was blocked by CU's defense before it could find the goal.
Senior goalkeeper
Jennifer Bassett (Keizer, Ore.) concluded her career donning the navy and gold with a game-high tying three saves, while Concordia used the two-headed net-minding monster of Georgie Christensen and Tori Talbutt en route to collecting its 11th shutout of the season.
Despite falling in the conference semifinals, Corban turned in a season-long performance that far exceeded all expectations. According to the preseason coaches' poll, the Warriors were picked to finish sixth and miss the playoffs for the first time since Ziesemer took over in 1996. Thanks to a six-game winning and seven-game unbeaten streak over the span of one month, Corban finished with 19 points and entered the playoffs as the No. 3 seed.
